Our long weekend yak fishing trips

It's been a while since I posted a report so I thought I'd better get out and get some fishing done! With the winds on Sunday and Monday, we decided to take the yaks to more sheltered spots for some bass and pike. We tried a new section of a favourite river, hoping to get into some big'uns. I didn't catch much on Sunday, the bass weren't biting for me so I put on a sunfish-coloured spinnerbait and went after some pike in the deeper spots. As soon as the spinnerbait hit the water, a nice 22" pike hits it. Caught another itty bitty one who ruined the skirt on the spinnerbait so that was the end of that, no more fish for me that day. No pics of these as Bowzog was around the bend and I wasn't gonna hold onto a feisty pike until he got there and took a pic. While he was around the bend, he caught this nice smallie, great colours.

Found this big guy lounging in a little channel I decided to explore

A bit of rain came our way, but not enough to soak us. Check out the clouds

after the rain, and as the sun was setting, the air got cooler, with a mist forming on the river. It was pretty neat

On Monday, we took the yaks out to Clayton Lake, launched them by the dam in "downtown" Clayton. Lots of stumps and weeds from there to the main lake. Again Bowzog caught all the bass, but I didn't take any pictures of them because he didn't take pictures of my pike the previous day

I didn't catch a thing until I put on the white hardnose toad. Got a few blowups until finally hooking this little beaut

Caught a few more after that, got caught in another small rain shower and then the bite pretty much died down.

All in all it was a pretty good few days on the water, enjoying the quiet paddle to the isolated patches of lilypads and weeds. Catching fish was a bonus.

Great report, pics, *and* fish, you two! Awesome to see some more yak people out there

Glad to see you only had a small rain shower on Monday (unlike the torrential downpour that Joco and I experienced)

These pics were taken with one of those Pentax cameras, correct? Wow, I really have to get one of these... Waterproof *and* great pictures...

You were too far away.....even with the zoom my 6lb lunker largie woulda looked small.....

...some of the pics were taken with the Pentax waterproof.....not all though. We were also using an Olympus 2.1mp C-2100 ultrazoom.

Thanks for an outstanding report and wonderful photo's (including the "obligatory" wildlife shots...

).

I'm really glad to hear you made it out, finally, and enjoyed some quality fishing and gorgeous scenery. It must be really peaceful paddling around those back bays. I'm sure you get to see some really neat stuff that way. It would be somewhat disturbing for me to hook something significant, like a big pike, in a little yak!

You could get towed around the lake with a gator sized esox on the other end of your line.

Thanks again for the great post and pic's. I hope you can get out again very soon. Gord, I want more Slushy fish pic's, so you should make yourself available to her every beck and call. After all, you ARE the cabin boy.

any wildlife pic and pics with CabinBoy.... er.... I mean...Bowzog in them were taken with the Olympus. It's only 2 megapixels but it still takes wonderful pics. What I like about it is the zoom, 10x with stabilizer, great for bringing the wildlife in closer without blurring. It's a little too bulky and not waterproof so I don't take it out too often.

Kayak fishing is fun, but it's hard getting out of the yak after sitting in it for 5 hours! I like it when I want a quiet day of fishing, no noise, just the sound of the paddles and the wildlife. I swear there's howler monkeys in those woods
