Big Muskie Thief Ruined My Fishing Day

I was having the best fishing day, quantity wise. :D In the past, I've only been able to catch four fish max. Today, I managed six. Nothing big and all panfish, biggest was a 10" perch.

Made my way to an area where the water was really murky. I could only see a few inches down and lots of weeds. Made a few casts and out of no where this big muskie surfaces and takes my lure. :( My rod didn't even bend. It was so fast, that I didn't even have enough time to react, I just kept reeling.

I'm not sure exactly how big it was but it was big enough that it took my 2" lure in one gulp. Even though I've never seen a muskie, I was able to confirm that is was a muskie based on the pictures I've seen here on FH from 10 feet away and in murky water.

I tied on the same type of lure and went to another area and wasn't able to catch anything after that.

I guess in a way, I'm glad the muskie made off with my lure since I was using my ultralight gear. A $4 lure vs a $30 rod.

Even though it ate my lure, it was pretty neat seeing my first muskie. 8)

Anyone ever catch a muskie on ultralight gear?

A muskie on a UL outfit...now that would be sweet/scary fight! Actually, there likely wouldn't be a fight at all because your line would snap from the impact of the strike... but I guess it's possible in theory. I saw an older guy land a ski on what he later said was 6lb test.

I caught a 30" Channel Cat on a snoopy rod. I cant believe that the all plastic kids rod held up, It took about 30mins to get him in, but if you keep your drag set right, and try not to over do it. i think anything is possible.

Last year I caught a 12lb muskie on 4 lb test using a light spinning outfit.
a 6'6" foot IMG6 BPS travel rod with a 750 series symetre shimano spooled with 4lb stren.

My friends 12 year old daughter was noodling around with a panfish rod and a small jig and caught a 14lb muskie.

so yes it is possible to catch muskie on ligh to ultra light gear

Sure it's possible.....depending on the size and the knarlyness (i think that's a word) of the beast. You might want lots of line and a pretty loose drag though. Makes for a great fight for sure.

I caught one last year on light gear in Buckham's Bay. What a hoot.
