I just got done making a fish basket to tie up to the dock. ive made other using plywood, styrofoam and screen. but this time i went to the local dollar store, and bought a decent Tote, with a hindged lid and latches. I drilled 1/2" holes about every 3" all around the sides, and bottom. then i got 4 2" pvc ebows and some pipe. and assembeled a continous tube around the inside of the tote. and screwed it fast to the inside of the tote. It floated perfectly, only leaving about 1inch sticking out of the water. I like using these because we get back from fishing usually at midnight or so. and it helps to keep the fish alive, to clean the next day or so. Or you can trade smaller fish for larger ones, without killing them.

Hey Boozer, I remember using a fish basket many, many, years ago once only! We caught some decent Walleye and wanted to keep them alive until the morning for breakfast...we put them in the basket which was tied to a tree, threw it in the water and jumped in the tent to get some sleep.

I'll never forget waking up in the middle of the night to the sounds of thrashing and splashing outside the tent . A friggin 30lb snapping turtle had a feast that night leaving nothing but a few walleye heads and a mangled basket with gapping holes in it. ....we got skunked the next day and I never did get a chance to snack on some fish that weekend

Moral of the story: Bring plenty of ice in your cooler, be thankful to catch some good eating sized fish and CLEAN your fish ASAP

You must of been using one of those chicken wire, cloaspable baskets. Ive seen snappers around mine, and coons trying to pick the latch. but never had anything get in them. That would really bite loosing walleye to the local snappers.
