I have been to morris island shore fishing on two occasions now and have only 1 smallmouth. this was with a brown and green worm (slurpies) rigged wacky.
this was at location 2 on the map.

I started out a #1 and ended at #5

when i was there on this past tuesday i got no action from the same setup as above. so i moved to a crayfish big-o with no results and also a northland jungle jig (black and blue). no action on my shad coloured big-o either. when i was at location #5 i noticed watter bugs scattering and then regrouping and bubbles coming up. i even say a bass stick its head out of the water to grab a bug. but i could not get anything to bite.

anyone have any suggestions on what types of lures/bait/colours etc. i should be using? i am new to fishing with lures so i do know i have to work on some things like presentation.

any advice or help would be appreciated. perhaps someone could recommend a better spot around morris island?

I know i am asking alot for my first post, but i couldn't find anything in the forums to answer my questions.

My buddy and I fish Morris about twice a year, but from a motorized canoe. Basically I think the place is a bit overfished, but it is possible to access some decent spots by hiking into the certain areas.
Both me and my buddy have fished the entire corrador, from 5 to 1. We have had no luck here, at all.
I would suggest to you the area just above lookout number 3. We have come in that way, and this inlet has a direct feed in from the Ottawa River, offering a fair amount a current, and some good fishing off the shelf on the oposing island (east island of number 3). All along between those two islands are fairly deep with nice structure and some good hiding places for bass.
You may want to continue your hike until you get right out to the edge of the Ottawa on the same path... throw a few plugs in there too ... we have scanked a few pike and bass there also.

I used to take my son fishing there a few times per year. At the time, there was the fishing platform right next to the "4" but it was removed last time I was there.

Anyhow, in the deeper water there using slip bobbers and worms we'd pick up largemouth bass and pike. Some big pike in the fall there. Once I even got into a school of walleye and picked up 3 nice ones in a row. I suspect the spot is dependent on the current and whether or not the water is rising. They lower the water in the fall so unsure what its like now. I have seen monster carp at the spot also.

We also walked out to the main river (the upper "w" on the map) and you can get access to faster water in spots and using jig/twister you can pick up Smallmouth. Not sure this bite lasts until fall, but in summer it's pretty good.

I fish there for walleye all the time and there haven't been all too many there in the last couple of years. Prior to that we did pretty good. I fish off the points out on the river though. We have caught large mouth in the coves at 4 and 5 and we like to use top waters for the fun of it.

There are greedy rock shelves off the points so I've lost a few lewers over the years. I tend to just use jigs or Uzek spinners with a piece of worm although i've been playing with slip bobbers and big weights to get out deeper but I only to seem to get hits about 5-10 meters off shore.

i can attest to the greedy rocks. i lost a big-o, spinner, jawbreaker, and worms on hooks.

still haven't had much luck. but heh it beats the worst day of work.
