I am looking at picking up the VEx FL 20.

It has various transducer beam angles - 9 degrees, 12 degrees, 19 degrees and a dual 9/19 degrees. Can anyone explain the difference here?

If it is like the finder for my boat, does this mean that the higher number gives you a wider view underneath? If that is the case, if the 9 degree and the 19 degree are the same price, why wouldn't you buy the 19? The 9 degree is actually more expensive than the 12 and the 19, does that mean it is more precise?

Check into a Marcum LX5...

more features, more power and cheaper $$ then a FL20

what's optional on a vex is standard on the Marcum...

If buying new....

the lx5 comes with a dual cone, it's still an option for a vex....

damn vex is like a car, buy it, then start adding options...

s-cable, charging system, case etc...

Marcum comes good to go out of the box...

only place where vex beats marcum is depth... max depth on marcum is 160ft, 200 on a vex...

vex is living off it's name... the fl20 was a dissappointment to many vex fans....

i did research before buying the marcum, and hands down marcum was the way to go... i believe that they are both around the same price, but then start adding options then the vex becomes more expensive...

Marcum has as a standard unit:

more wattage 2000 vs Vex's 400

soft cover case ( optional on a vex)

digital charging system with lcd display (not 4 leds like a vex)

dual cone transducer ( no optional s-cable required)

dual cone changes at the press of a button, no need to change transducers

finer resolution (up to 3/4"... not that it makes a difference too much...)

adjustable zoom throughout the entire water column ( vex only has bottom lock)

12 level interference rejection (10 levels on a vex...)

it's like a Ford vs GM thing... Vex vs Marcum

granted they both help catch fish, but dollar for dollar, a marcum gives you a lot more...

Instead of trying to sway you which make or what model to buy I will try to answer your question:
Like the transducer on your boat the Vexilar transducer sees in a cone. The diameter of that cone expands every 10ft of depth or so, just like the Fish finder on your boat.
The difference lies in the way the two units percieve bottom.
The Vexilar will precieve bottom as the first large surface it hits. So, if you are on a nice drop off, the vex could precieve the high edge of the dropoff as bottom and will not read anything below ...
With a large degree transducer, say 19, this could be a problem, as you will not see your bait presentation or fish.
If you lower the degree angle of degree to 9, you lower that radius of the cone, which lessens any chances for error.
If you fish in deep water perhaps a smaller degree is for you also.
Picking the degree is just as important as picking the Flasher unit itself. You know the type of fishing you usually do .. so you know what to pick.
