Goodbye to a Dear Friend

Most of you are familiar with my dog, Toby, who accompanies me on almost every boat outing, and of course is my constant companion and has been for the past 13 years. No one liked to hear the drag scream more than that red dog.
We had to put Toby down on Sunday morning, without much warning, so we are all in a shocked, depressed state.
Toby knew how to live life and
enjoy every stinkin' day, come whatever. I'm going to try to take that away from this whole experience and remember the good times. There were plenty of them.
I miss you, buddy.
W.
PS: all of you with dogs, go give them a big hug right now. A dog's life is too short.

Rats..... Putting down a fishing buddy who is always ready to go and never wants to go home is an incredibly difficult thing to do.

That's heartwrenching news Margie...
It's so true about a dog's life being too short....12-13 years seems to be the trouble zone...
Be Happy he led a strong healthy active life...

Wolfe....I am so very sorry to hear about your loss!!!!!

.....
We lost our boy 3 years ago just around this time of the year which devastated my wife and I.....he was only 5yrs old...
We called the Humane Society a couple of days after Christmas and they informed us that they had a litter of 8 puppies that they rescued which were available for adoption.....when we arrived the next day to see what they were like, there were only 2 brothers left.....
We couldn't find it in our hearts to separate them so we adopted them both
Here they are today..
We know what you're going through right now and wish you all the best...
As time and sorrow passes, and you guys think about possibly bringing another addition into your family, please think about adopting from the SPCA or Humane Society...they have wonderful animals waiting to be adopted by a wonderful family..

Im sorry to read you lost your friend!
Walking With an Old Dog
Because you will not be forever,
Hope against time though I may,
I paint your picture in my memory,
Eyes blue with age, muzzle gone gray.
Because you walked with me in Springtime,
Puppy-clumsy, running free.
As you grew, we grew together-
You became a part of me.
Because you shared with me my sorrows,
Not understanding- simply there.
Often spurring me to laughter--
My friend, you know how much I care.
Because the years have slowed your fleetness,
Though your spirit still is strong.
I promise I will take more time now,
So that you can go along.
Because you do not fear the future,
Living only in the now,
I draw strength from your example-
Yet time keeps slipping by somehow.
Because the day will soon be coming
When I will no longer see
You rise to greet me-but in memory
You will always walk with me.

Wolfe,
So sorry to hear about your loss. When I first got our dog Ceilidh I didn't dream that I would become so attached to her....but she was my little buddy for the longest time.
Best regards to the family.

Everyone,
thanks so much for all the kind, caring, supporting words and for the encouragement. I can see that so many of you understand how devastating the loss of a furry member of the family is. The hole left behind is gaping.
1lastcast - that was a very moving poem and tribute to all those special friends. I knew the day was coming, I just didn't realize how close it was.
TroutnMuskieHunter - With regard to adopting another dog, this is in the very near future. There is no replacing Toby & we're not looking to. He was one of a kind. But a new animal to bond with and love can help to ease our grief ... and in return, we will be giving a needy animal a family to love and care for it. I believe in adoption vs. purchasing pets, as well, and that's just what we'll be doing. Your dogs are beautiful, by the way.
Anyway, I just wish I could hug my dog again and hear his exhuberant bark. Waiting for the school bus without him to greet the kids is tough.
Thanks again, you guys. I mean it.
W.
