What have you learned this year (ice fishing)

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Post by Fishing 24/7 »

this year is a great year for me and my fishing buddies and i hope we still get some nice outting and nice reports.

i now i have learned so many things this year it dosent even make sense!!!

1- a gas auger is #1

2- a balanced tip up is better for walleyes! 8)

3- when a tip up goes down and its not yours dont run for it!

4- it dosent matter when you set the hook.. its all about how he took it!

5- OOS back in the water without any pictures! (and no scales) 8)

6- running and gunning is not always the best technique!!!

etc...

what have you leanred this year???

#2 : look confused and winded after getting to ice fishing spot and watch buddy go drill the 20 holes necessary !!!

#3 : aqua vu rules ! :D

#4 : secret spots are to stay that way 8)

I pretty much got the whole ice fishing thing down to a tee and have taking in and learned a lot along the way in recent years from the folks who got me started. But then again there is so much I don't know..You learn something new everyday. Here are a few things that will help things go a lot smoother come next winter.

Fish-Traps don't just fit in trucks and vans but ontop of cars!

Icewells swallow the legs and feet of many and need to marked off regardless of how secluded the area is your fishing

Purchase a rod locker for all 8 combos(And the new ones on the way  ) so the reps at St.Croix don't burn down my house...

When fishing crappie on smaller, less pressured lakes, don't even bother until the sun goes down.

ALWAYS have a first-aid kit on hand.

When walleye fishing deeper water mid-day, bigger fish always seem to be suspended more than a few feet off of the bottom and will crush your bait out of nowhere. You won't even mark them most of the time. Fish shallow and all will catch are piggies ( I can't even imagine what a school of BOQ walleye passing through on my vexilar would look like  )

Run and gunning always pays off.

Buy a Jiffy!

1.jigging with little perch type rapala Very effective for Smb :D

2.Live bait can become very expensive several hundred dollars so
far this season

3.Gulp hooks are real great for easy hook removal # 2/0 work good

4.You don't really have to run to your tip-up like its a hundred yard dash

5. The use of terms like '' Paradise Lake '' '' Lake xxx '' '' Monster ''

'' Number One '' are offensive to some F-H members

1) 10' feet of snow makes for a hard trek into fav. spot
2) I'm getting too old to trek thru 10' of snow
3) I need a snowmobile that can drive in 10' of snow

Ditto to what Matt said.

Deep snow and old age don't mix well.

1) when going out with buddies and a sled .... easier to put most items in backpacks and share sled pulling fro larger items.

2) hand auger easier for early ice but power auger a must after 12"

3)persistence pays.

4) flasher helps in more ways than one.

5)if you see man and women go into fish hut.... DONT GO KNOCKING ON DOOR!

That Trap butt and Vex neck are part of the deal.

And always downsize...I witnessed numerous large fish caught this winter on tiny baits...and I mean tiny...
