For those of you that use lead core line....Does anyone use backing line with this setup or just the leadcore with a 50 - 60' fluoro leader??

Just a question. why would you need 50-60 feet of leader material??

I run lead core all of the time, the way I rig my reels with a full core is I place on a few hundred feet of 15 pound super line like P-Line Spectrex followed by 18 pound test 10 colour core and then 20 feet of mono or copolymer leader. When contour trolling with lead-core I use 10 feet of 10lb super line braid as the leader.

Hope that helps...

Yes you need backing.....it is somewhat of a guessing game depending on how many colours you are putting on....

What reel are you putting 10 colours on Sheldon?

I run ballpark 200 feet of 17 pound mono.....to 3,4 or 5 colours of core...then a 50 foot lead of fluro...

That setup will fill a large line counter reel perfectly....

RJ,
I fill a Tekota 600 LC with 10 colour core 18lb Kerplunk. The Braided backing I use is 4 lb thickens so I can get it on with no problems.

I never use segmented cores any more as I found it was a waste of money with 12 rod and reel combos with all different sections of core. Now I just run 4 full cores and adjust as needed by letting line out. I even snap the core to the clips in the in-line boards and have never had a problem with a line break in two seasons.

RJ, Sheldon,

I just bought a PENN 320 GT2 reel (320yds 20lb/0.45mm mono capacity)....I also bought 100yds/10 colors of 27lb Kerplunk..

Where can I purchase the P-Line Spectrex??...I've heard of P-line CXX, Evolution, Halo and Floroclear but never Spectrex...

I was going to spool 50' of Seagar fluoro for the leader...too long??

I'd trade that 27 pound in for 18 if ya can.....

I don't think you'll get a full 10 colours on that reel.... :?

I think that's exactly what I'm gonna do tomorrow.....damn ...another trip into town and $20 worth of gas  !!!....Spence at LeBarons was pretty sure it would fit but I sure don't want to unspool it and get screwed by not being able to return it!!.....

TMH
The reason for using 18 lb is it has the same sink rate (sam amount of lead) as the 27 lb but is much thinner in diameter so you can get more on a reel.

You can use any braid you'd like TMH....Power Pro will do the same thing....

Most guys need a Penn 309 to be able to load a full 10 colours....I'm actually surprised the Tekota 600 does hold it all...it doesn't look to be near the same size of a Penn 309...

A Penn 309 holds 350 yds of 30 lb..
A Tekota 600 holds 300 yds of 20 lb..
Your reel holds 320 of 20 lbs...

So maybe...

If you want to try it out....put your backing on....then start to fill the reel.....if it looks like it won't fit.....tie it off to something outside and pull it back off.....then restart the process....saves ya ruining the spool....

I'll assume you are using this for inland lakers?....Drop weights would do the same thing for you TMH.....and you can use lighter line and a much more limber rod....I've really pushed away from heavy rigger poles....for our inland fish.....they are no fun....Right now my favorite combo is a Heartland 7'6" medium...an awesome stick for our 2-7 pound fish....

Here's a question....

How do they make it 18 pound test and 27 pound test by simply making it thinner....but it still sinks the same amount per colour....

I guess the same guy who knows that....knows the Caramilk secret as well...

RJ,

You have been hanging around the salmon guys to long...
I can spool a whole ten colours on a Sealine LC 47 with not problems. That is the largest real I have ever seen a walleye angler use. One my old LC 17 reels I could get 7 colours on the reel.

The braided nylon sheath that surrounds the lead-core is thicker on the higher pound test as they do not include the strength of the lead in the rating. The resistance vs. sink rate is almost the same on a full core (10 colours), therefore #27 pound test lead-core out 10 colours @ 2mph will be 59 feet down and #18 pound test lead-core out 10 colours @ 2mph will be 58 feet down. When you start to run less colours out the thinner diameter 18lb will have go deeper than the more resistant 27 lb.
