Channel Cat deep in the Jock ?!?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Channel Cat deep in the Jock ?!?

Post by gmctruck »

My buddy lives in Munster along the Jock River. The other day his wife was down at the river and thought she was looking at a huge rock ... until the rock swam away :) After flipping through on-line photos, she identified the fish as a channel cat. Is is possible/common for a catfish to be that far up the Jock??

Cheers,

Given that the Rideau R. biodiversity studies have not recorded any channel cats, my feeling is that it is unlikely that it was a channel cat. My guess is that it was a big brown bullhead catfish.

I didn't think that brown bullheads got very big, but I just checked and the MNR regs describe them as being betweeen 8-14 inches. I guess she saw a monster :)

Was most likely a sucker. That river is full of suckers up near Munster. I grew up there and if you go on jock trail road, you can fish off the bridge and you'll see 10+ suckers instantly. Or at least it was like that 5 years ago.

There is pike and muskie in there as well. Personally I've never caught anything amazing in there. It's a small river and years ago there was a big sewage spill in there I think. I'm sure it's fine now but the Jock is just dirty in my opinion. it's still an important little river.

I've caught a small Muskie in Kings creek which is at the intersection of Jock Trail Road and Dwyer Hill Road. Still not really worth fishing though.

Pretty little creek though.

I see people fishing where the Jock empties out into the Rideau. There is a good spot for Walleye right near Carleton Lodge where the river becomes deep and bends a little but this is further down from where the Jock empties.
