I fish walleye, mainly because they are by far the best eating fish around. I was recently reading the regulations and it seems for those of use that do not keep small walleye, (anything under sixteen inches) that the limit in White Lake is one walleye. Can anyone confirm this for me. Thank you.

white lake is in zone 18 if you have a sports fishing licence you are allowed only 4 walleye no more than 1 greater than18.1 in. where did you see only 1 walleye in the 2008-2009 regulations for white lake

I am sure this happens every year but is White Lake not Zone 15 and just opened yesterday not last week??? Or have we been waiting for this week for nothing

I'm not positive but I think White Lake straddles the border of both 15 & 18 so ya have to be careful which part of it yer in at the start o' the season.
Of course it doesn't matter now but for future reference ya might wanna be very clear about it, this is the only lake I've ever been 'pulled over' by the police.

The reason I asked this question is because if you look in the regs, you will see that the limit for walleye in Zone 18 is four fish and only one greater that 18.1 inches. When you look in the exceptions under White Lake it says that you can not keep any walleye between 13.8 and 19.7 inches. I take this to read that unless you keep walleye that are less than 13.8 in., you can only keep one walleye and it must be bigger than 19.7 inches. If I am wrong please let me know as I am going up to White Lake this weekend. Thank you.

You have read the regs right.... White Lake is considered Zone 18 and it is in the exceptions.... If ever in doubt call the MNR they know best... If you're lookin to load up the cooler the Madawaska might be a better option as it has a higher reproduction rate and you're allowed 2 over 19.7.

What are the limits coming to...

I must say that on Friday I was on the Ottawa and to tell you the truth cried not once but 2 times with an average of 19.5.... Now if you ask me I really didn't want to keep the smaller of the species around an average of 12-14 but wanting to get a taste I had no choice,. So.. where I would have taken a couple large ones I ended taking my limit to make up for the two I sent back.. At this rate I can see the population shrinking fast....

What gets me in all this is that I do a lot of fishing and have seen very little increase in the amount of people fishing the Ottawa. I could be wrong. Anyhow, I compare the slot size and new limits to the first steps in spoiling the sport. It happened for me in Moose hunting where a gang of 10 of us because of the regs and draws simply packed it in and took with us abut 15K out of the small norther towns each year. Gas, sleeps, meals and riffles and clothing we bought annually. Fishing will be the same soon... if your forced to work within the regs then you will get to a point where you will pack it in... I am thinking golf is right around the corner again..

This is how stupid it is for White Laker... Why not put a simple note in the exceptions. No.. some fat donut pusher at the MOE office decided lets not bother and see what happens... Sorry if I offend anyone but the reg writers need to be a lot more clear on the sectional bounders. One thing is for sure they know them when they want to lay charge..

I wish they would ban keeping any targeted fish in highly fished regions for 3-5 years. When I came to Ottawa in 1989 The fishing was amazing. Right on Victoria island you could catch 10-15 walleyes ( 20"+) in couple hours ... these days it sucks
I do 100% catch and release for the pas 15 years unless the fish wouldn't survive the release.

I am ok with highly fished areas being restricted but realistically they need to determine populations of species first. I am of the opinion that this is not being very well done because of cut backs etc.

On the stretch of Ottawa I live they have a sanctuary which I totally agree with. They could stretch this area for a couple more weeks even if they find the population is being fished out.

According to the regs White Lake in it's entirety is in zone 18 and, on that lake, you can't keep any walleye between 13.8 and 19.7 inches.
