Fish-Hawk.Net

We were fishing for catfish on Sunday on the Ottawa river near Andrew Hayden park.
Take a look at we managed to wrangle up. It was at least 3 feet long and when I tried to pick it up...it was so strong I dropped it back into the net like a hot potato.

Please let me know what you guys think.

looks like an american eel to me. They used to be plentiful in the St Lawrence
river. Now they are on the endangered species list i believe.

yeah those things put up a HELL of a fight!

Especially when they wrap themselves around your arm. they are so close to a snake that if I get one on, line gets cut and he's on his own to test the hook rusting out thing. unless I can get the hook out with pliers and not touching it.

I remeber the last time i caught a ''a EEL...it was on the nation river in caselman..it was 49inch long..man what it strong..but the worst thing..

the slime on that EEL.....was very sticky....it felt in the fllor off my boat..man that slims watch so sticky i got slim on my boat for the next 3 weeks after that..hard to wash on rug.. .

but there sher are strong wen try to unhook them..

American eel for sure. Neat fish, but severely in decline. There's no longer a season for them, they all migrate out of our rivers to the sargasso sea to spawn. Check it out:

This Eel was 3 feet long if it was an inch. Got itself all tangled up in the line, kept twisting and twisting. Cut it loose and that's when we took the pictures. And you are right, lots of slime on the line that was cut free. They sure give you a shock when they start to go postal on you.

ickkkkkk....no eels come in my boat or my net....takes WEEKS to get rid of the slime and omg the slime stinks!!!

My uncle had caught one at the Alymer Marina years ago...I thought it was pretty cool. Caught on a red devil spoon.

We would get the odd eel on White Lake while fishing for bullheads.
It would be quit the shock too as we fish bullheads with hand lines and in the dark. The eels would scare the crap out of ya! LOL

Yep, caught lots of those in the river, White Lake and a few on Mississippi Lake also years ago when fishing for cats at night with a hand lines.

Just cut the line and don't bring them in your boat as they will make a mess and leave a slimy residue all over the place. Also if you bring them in your boat and the hook comes off it’s a nightmare to try and pick them up.

wouldnt cuttin the line and leaving the lure/hook in its mouth have a high chance of killing it? Being already endangered dosent help either

I saw one being caught last year at petrie island, it was squirming everywhere, but it was cool!

I pulled the hook out of this "thing" with really long needle nosed pliers and then cut the line that was wrapped around it. This one should live to get real big.
