My Dad's coming to visit me in Ottawa this July and I'd love to treat him to a guided fishing trip on the Ottawa River (Or somewhere nearby) for either Bass or Musky. We wouldn't be looking for trophies, just for a day of steady action on the water since my Dad has never fished Bass or Musky (He's a hardcore walleye/trout guy) but I know that he's always been curious. Largemouth bass are always fun and plentiful, but if it's possible to have steady casting action (not trolling) for Musky or Pike that'd be a blast too.
Has anyone here had any experiences with local guides? Can you recommend any? Where should I look for info on them? Google has been coming up pretty empty on my searches...
when is he commin down? i go on holidays the 1st week of July so i'll be out on the water quite a bit... if you guys dont mind some wading i'd love to get you guys into some bass and pike, and possibly a muskie... no charge obviously im no charter... but i'll get you into steady bass action... also if he's a trout guy is he bringing a fly rod? i do some fly fishing for bass aswell and can get him into some decent spots... let me know as i'll be out there anyways and im always looking for someone new to fish with...
He's coming up between the 12th and the 19th of July. He's kind of on a whirlwind trip so he's travelling very light. Another reason for the guide would be that he'd only need to bring himself basically. We're kinda limited that way.
I've never targetted Musky (Caught my first one ever at Voyageur Park last weekend while casting for Pike) so I apologize if this is a stupid question, but is casting for musky in shallower water anywhere near as "productive" (i.e. catch multiple fish per hour) as say fishing largemouth? Or am I better off targetting bass if I want to give him an action packed day? Either would be a new experience for him so I'd like to err on the side of more fish. The shows on WFN make it seem like non-stop action but I'm pretty sure they're heavily edited haha. I really want to show him a great time on the water. What do you guys think?
I think you should then stick to bass if your going to go solo.
Whereas no guide can ``guarantee`` fish, a musky guide such as the ones I suggested know a ton of good spots and for sure increases your chances of landing one or two.
Muskie fishing is not non-stop in my experience. If you want like 40 fish + days go with bass etc.
There can be times when the muskies will bite just about anything thrown at them but those days are few and far between.
Some of the guides mentioned may be able to do half a day of musky and then half a day of bass.
I know these guys personally and they do an awsome job of what they do. They have helped many clients land 50 inch class fish.
In any rate even if you don`t catch one I am sure you`d have an awsome day with them.
Both guides use top notch equipment. 1 is a St.Croix sponsored guide the other is a G.Loomis sponsored guide. SO no worries of equipment. They are very knowledgeable of the waters they guide.
I have fish with both of them and they really know their stuff!
I can personally vouch for muskiestalker. Myself and my two kids went out on the Madawaska for a 1/2 day with him last year. He is very knowledgeable, has lots of patience and knows the waters very well. We were targeting small mouth and he led us to three or four spots where they were hitting quite well. The kids had a blast and Kert was always encouraging them and seemed to have a great time.
Although he is a Musky Guide, he'll put you onto bass as well.
I've been out with him numerous times...
I like many others on here, have the musky curse. I've been out with some good muskie guys from the board, but the muskies don't show when fatluke's on board. Well I caught one last summer, but it was nothing to speak of. I've caught bigger walleye!!
if you'ld like to get him into MANY MANY bass i'll take you to one of my spots, and trust me you've never seen soo many bass, now the catch is that none are over 2lbs, but theres one on at least every 2nd cast... get ahold of me and i'll take you guys out... i've got all the gear you need... rods, reels, fly gear, etc.... just show up...
Thanks for all the replies and PMs guys! I was able to get a day trip with Musky Stalker and he's gonna put us onto both Musky and Bass. I can't wait. Thanks again for all the help. I'm so stoked, I can't wait to see my dad's face. Sounds like it could be an action packed day!
Jay, I might have to take you up on that later, but I'd have to bring my girlfriend cause she'd kill me if I went bass fishing without her.
Not a problem if you'ld like to bring her... as long as she doesn't mind wading a lil bit through the water... no leeches or much seaweed... i've got a girl that comes out with me aswell... so it sounds like a good time...
