Hook selection for Horny Toads/Cane Toads etc.

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Hook selection for Horny Toads/Cane Toads etc.

Post by Snakebite »

What type of hooks are you all using for fishing Horny Toad (insert your favourite brand here) type frog baits?

Over the weekend I tried 4/0 and 3/0 EWG worm hooks but found rigging them properly difficult. Went in through the nose and tried to come out just before the legs so that the point was parallel with the frogs back.

Suggestions on hooks and how to rig them greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

See Gord (Bowzog) at Bits and Baits for the new frog hooks

Bits and baits have special frog hooks. It's a double hook that you squeeze together to insert in the plastic and when it comes out you turn and set up like a regular frog hook.

We also have them at Paddletales. I find them a little difficult to rig. Personally, I prefer a 4/0 or 5/0 extra wide gap Owner. I used the 5/0 on Strike King Rage Tail Toads last weekend and had a good hookup ratio.
