It's the little things that add up...

don't you find that it's the little things that get your blood boiling or fustrates you when it comes to fishing?
Let me tell you about my little adventures in boating and fishing.
I'll start with the new fiberglass bassboat I bought this spring.
During her maiden voyage, I managed to put a healthy scratch along side of her while it was moored to the dock. turns out a nail was sticking out and as the waves rolled in , it rubbed the boat against the nail. Lesson learned, when fishing alone and running to get the truck & trailer at the end of a days fishing, tie off the boat with boat bumper first.
then my wife managed to put a nice dent in the wheel fender of the trailer by not making a wide enough turn around a tight corner which had post next to it. This is after I repeatedly told her to make very wide turns when trailering.
Runs great, when it runs but somehow the dealer neglected or I just forgot, about the batteries longevity when it comes to running all the pumps and electronics. I was in a touny sunday and with 30 minutes to check in, I turned the key and the motor wouldn't start. Turns out my main cranking batt had died. The pumps sucked the life out of them. thank god for one of the other competitors stopped and loaned a spare battery for me to get to the check-in in time. Thanks team 64!

I took a friend out fishing, it didn't take long before he managed to step on a rod and break the tip off. This after I repeatedly helped him at clearing the many birdsnest's with my baitcasting reel he was using.

then I noticed scratches on the lower unit of my outboard. I scratched my head thinking where in the h3ll did they come from?? turns out the little rubber stoppers on my transom saver bar fell off leaving only a screw hanging enough to do it's damage.

Oh, and let's not forget about the keel protector gaurd I had put on. Seem's that little beauty just doesn't want to stay on to my hull.

all can be replaced or fixed and it's never a big enough problem to worry about but it sure does make for extra work on the boat & gear this year.

It's like having boat and gear gremlin's sneaking up on you all the time.

i'm sure i'm not alone on this. does anyone else have boat gremlin problems they'd like to share...or comments on how i can get some of these fixed?

Last year ,, I bought a new boat and motor,, I wanted to keep it brand new forever .............


I too left it at the dock while I went and got the car and trailer ,, Meantime
A boat pulled up beside mine and '' Buddy '' decides he's going to hold on to mine while he waits inline , Which caused mine to rub against the cement dock = scratch bigtime

Man did I blow a gasket

WOW, this story sounds familiar. I have had a bass boat for 15 years and yes many of the same things you have mentioned here have happened to me too!!
I had a guy nail those round floater things that kids play in the pool with, you those foam things, well guess what happens when you nail that on a dock and time makes the holes bigger?? Yep 3 six inch nails (head end sticking out) scratched the crap out of my bass boat, through the gel coat, right into fiberglass!!

I can’t start by saying how many times I have had guys in my boat breaking rods, dropping pliers, electronic fishing scales, rods and reels in the water.

But I guess that's all part of being a boat owner. What I can tell you is this, this can happen at anytime, for example after having my boat for 15 years for the very first time I had a bow out while trailoring my boat on Sunday morning doing close to 57mph on the 417 this weekend. Scratches will happen and you won’t even know where the hell they came from. Just keep fishing man!

Things will happen. The only thing I can recommend when it comes to caring about your boat is; double check everything, don't let anyone do anything to your boat thinking its done right and always, always make sure that if you ever have to second guess yourself about doing or checking something then for sure take the time and check it again, just do it.

In closing if your tired and start taking shortcuts about putting your boat away or docking it properly at the end of the day, dollars to doughnuts its going to go wrong.

PS: Yes, I better let you on this one too, don't ask your boating partner to make sure they put the plug in the boat, for sure they will forget.

one off my boats was in great shpe..but i did not had a tarpo for it..so to travel i put a trap over it and ty it dow wit those bunge cord wit the hooks on uit..wen i stopp and wen to see........

the bunge cord hold but it flap...all those metal hook made some dink on the paint..like ziliions off them..become off the flaping..never again now..ty down tight..no flapping.

Jeez, Bassman, maybe you should buy a quick pick, because the only way your luck can go is north (or better).

I hate when those things happen because they tend to happen in multiples. You can deal with one or two things, but tack on a few others, and it amplifies each individual thing.

I bought a boat last year and when I got it from the marina this year where it was stored, my seats where faded, my trolling motor didn't work right, and work that I had paid for wasn't done. (new windshield).

Kudos to the marina, they made right on EVERYTHING and gave me a break on the windshield. They even gave me better seats on the replacement seats. Sometimes, people going over and above can make you feel a lot better.

I'm with the rest of you, no shortcuts as it relates to the boat!

its true... little things are wat is the main cause of male pattern baldness... its a pattern alright!!! everyone hates little misshaps... lol... not saying ur bald or anything scott... if you're having trouble with the boat, just drop it off at my place... dont worry scott i'll take good care of it... lol... drop me a line and let me know when u wanna get out... the gf is stoked now that shes seen the boat dude!!!

Life happens while you aren't watching so relax, laugh at it and don't let it get you down. The most important thing is that the boat still floats and you can still fish from her.

This is why I park very far away, it helps but I can't always do this.

What bothers me when I park far away,

1. Some guy has the same ideal and decides to park right beside me even though the entire lot is empty.

2. If I'm with a girl, she complains she has to walk a mile (And yes sometimes it is). But she has no problems going to the gym and walking on the treadmill for two hours.

Joco, I had the exact same thing happen. To think I thought bungy cords was a great idea on my part. I was wrong. I guess it's a little better knowing all the things that have happened to my new boat, has happened to everyone else. Maybe we'll just call them battle scars and make up some cool story about the damage coming from fighting a fish of a lifetime.
