Hi all,

I'm from Thunder Bay Ontario. I love walleye and smallie fishing.....well I'll fish for anything....

I was reading the post spawn walleye thread. Two tips:

Go with huge bait. I use 6-8 inch sucker minnows.

Fish shallow. The lakes that I fish you can sight fish for female walleye in the 5-14 lb range. Common mistake is to fish summer depths in the spring. These fish are in less than five feet of water "sunning" themselves. This window of oportunity is very small. Sunlight doesn't affect them it seems. Fishing at night is great to. This is one of the best times to haul in a huge one.

Funny you mention the shallow water thing....yesterday in a local tournament here the big fish of the day came off a spinnerbait in very shallow water...

That's neat someone else is into shallow water walleye with spinner baits. I don't know if you read Ontario Out of Doors but it mentions that I use spinner baits for walleye in shallow water!

Oh no....they as far as I heard had moved into to chase pike...and lucked into the big eye...4.98 lbs...

Get lucky 3-5 times doing the same thing and it makes you go....."hmmmmmmm" Pattern?

I read your article. I agree about the depth thing (except for today's action they were deep). I've caught 90% of my walleye in less than 10ft. I don't dispute the effect that sunlight has on their sensitive eyes, but I really do think it's over-rated. They will go deep, but not as fast (or as deep) as the barrage of walleye magazine articles has led us to believe.

I have a good picture of how to use the big sucker minnows.

This one is hooked on a 1/2 ounce jig. The sucker minnow is hooked through an open mouth up through the snout. Then I slide a small piece of rubber band, tubing or a piece of plastic jig just to keep the sucker from wiggling off.

People mention covering a lot of water. Yes I agree but once you get hit work the area hard. Big sows won't move to fast in the early spring so you have to be patient.

Best spots that work for me is sandy bottomed areas that have a nice flat area the plummet into deep water.

Those sure are some big walleye. Welcome Rodger any information for some one like you is greatly appreciated, how can we possibly argue with those pics.
