This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

MegaReport: Rideau River, Sept 16, 17, 19 Lots of pics

Post by FishingIsHealing »

Here are some pictures of some SMALL fish I caught this evening within a 2 hours span on the Rideau River.

I had a nice 3+lb bass on the line and reeled it up to me only to have my line break and the fish flop down and roll off the top of the dam!!!

Little Smallmouth Bass with a view down it's mouth!

Nice Sized Bluegill, believe it or not it was actually a pretty big one.....it's hard to show in the picture, but it's one of the biggest I've seen this year.

A baby Bass, born this spring perhaps?

Baby Sunfish, Pumpkinseed Variety

Another smallmouth Bass

A nice Perch

Another Smallie

Baby Largemouth, possibly born in Spring

Nice semi-jumbo Perch

Here are some more pictures. I went bass fishing on the Rideau with my dad and we had a few good hits on our Scum Frogs, but nothing stuck so all I got was this bass.....Small but I still liked it.....
Image
The PUMPKINSEED and BLUEGILLS have become very colorful this fall for some reason. I pulled these pumpkinseeds out of the water and they were so orange they looked like PIRANHAS! Beautiful little fish!

If it had teeth it would be a Piranha!

Nother nice Sunfish

Baby Largemouth Bass caught during the week

NOW, everyone says eating fish during the Summer out of the Rideau River is disgusting so I did a little experiment with some Crappie I caught out of the River last Wednesday. I knocked them out, and brought them home and did a hack cleaning job on them, and beer battered them and fried them up in Canola oil....

This is one of the Crappie. Don't laugh at my "filleting" job, I've never filleted a Crappie before and didn't know how to do it properly.

Out of 2 crappie this size, I got enough for my dinner. The meat was very mild, and clean tasting. It didn't taste like the river smelled, which is usually the case with Rideau river fish in the Summer/Fall. There was no funky taste or anything, It was just like Walleye!!!! And I am VERY PICKY when it comes to fish....I don't like "FISHY" tasting fish...I like Halibut and Cod etc, and it taste just like that. Delicious.....I burnt a bit but it was amazing other than that!..

I know these fish may not be the biggest or best ( they are pretty damn small  ), but I had a blast and got some good pictures for my collection. I hope you enjoyed the pictures as much as I enjoyed catching the fish!

Take Care everyone!

Hey Tom! Nice to see your reports again! Decided to do a report after we thought the carp kidnapped you?

You know, I'd rather go fishing and catch small ones, than nothing at all, it's still fun, and going outdoors.

The crappie looked tasty! Well, the fried parts, not the crappie itself in the picture

Hahah, Thanks for reading my report Rico!

Those Damn Carp kidnapped me for 2 weeks and I have finally escaped!!!! :P

Now seriously, I have lost some pretty big fish in the last week. For some reason luck doesn't want me to have a big fish! haha.......

I had a nice one on the hook today and some older people stopped to talk to me and it broke right off and flopped into the river.....

The Crappie was actually perfectly fine.......Which is surprising.....you would think it would taste horrible in a River like the Rideau especially at this time with all the Algae and Weeds.....

If you've ever tasted Walleye or Perch is was pretty much the same......No stinky river taste to it which was awesome.......

But you only get like 2 little tiny fillets off of each fish so It's not really worth the effort......It was more of an experiment, haha.....

Have you ever ate a Bass Rico? I wonder what they taste like, there is so many of them...wonder if they are any good. I saw some people at Madawaska Lake leaving with a bunch of Bass.....People say they taste too fishy, but I dunno........they could be good, what do you think?

Almost! I know it looks bad but I felt the fish after and there was barely any meat on it, just some near the front head/belly and tail.....the rest was bones, and rib cage......

I had a really REALLY dull knife...........My dad gave me a sharpener just a day after this lol.

I know I did a real HACK job......

To be honest, I didn't know what to do or how to fillet...........since I've never been taught.........I just kinda did what seemed logical......I did manage to get a meal out of 2 of those though......so It was alright

I have no problem filleting a big fish like walleye though. More meat to work with, less loss.

Crappies are hard to work with. Especially ones of that size....haha...plus I was in dark on the front porch, mom wouldnt let me come in with it lol.....It was a really bad setup......

Next time i'll watch a video on YOUTUBE.com or something which teaches me how to fillet a crappie....but on this night I didn't have time, since the fish had been sitting for 30 mins dead with guts still in.....i just wanted to get the meat off ASAP.......

making filet ina plate is not that good at all.

try to find something strait....a pice off plastic or pice off wood..or even on the table on some news paper.

if not you will have hard time to filet and will losse some good meath by doing this the wrong way.

there is some nice crappies in there.

and be carfull bud..filet knife is realy dangerous..not saying a speach here just try to save you a finger or two. .

i do mine on the table on a filet board..just a piece off plexiglace..and that way its strait and dont damage anything...and i do it stand up..that is me.

its a good report..a lot off fish..thanks to share. :P

I would have filleted in the house on a cutting board but I still live with my mother, she made me do it on the front porch in the dark, The only light I had was the light that attaches to my hat.....lol

You know how women can be they don't like to see dead fish/animals, even spiders........

Next time I will sharpen my knife, wear a glove on the hand that not holding the knife, and I will fillet it on a FLAT surface.......

Anyways, thanks for the comments..............

Take Care!
