i want to try to do some ice fishing this year, i was wondering how long does it take to drill a hole with a manual ice auger?

How sharp are your blades and how good of shape are you in

Anywhere from 30 sec to 2 minutes

How thick is the ice???

Remember to let the auger do the work....

You know one option is to get the adapter for your 18V drill... I hear a good 18V and 8" auger can get you 20 holes in 2 feet of ice or something like that....

try punching an 8 inch hole with a manual auger in march when the ice is 3 feet thick. yeah it's not fun!

6 inch auger though gets through a little quicker, but gas augers are the way to go if you plan on fishing throughout the winter. it'll pay itself off the first couple outings.


you wont need to worry about punching through 3 inches of ice though, just pee in a circular motion, and that should do the trick lol!!!

Do not buy those drill adapters. They will basically only drill a couple of holes, in 12 inches of ice, and will ruin any drill that is attached to them. Pick up a sharp hand auger, much better for you, and no extra crap to lug around.

P.S.....don't forget to bring your hand auger as a backup....I'm sure that you'll be glad you did

not sure about ice holes but we use cordless drills for ski racing as well...with i think about a 3in bit....drills holes all day long no issue (hundreds of them)

Finn bore III auger is great manual one.

It's blades are not flat. It allows to drill faster.

I have 8 inch diameter if large pike bites.

i have the finbore as well, 8 inch and 6 inch. they are pretty sweet augers, just don't lend them to other people.

if anybody wants to borrow my augers i go and drill the holes my self. learned the hard way. some people just don't know how certain things work, then they break it.

i find late in the season the 8 inch sucks, cus the ice is pretty thick by then. so i usually start off the season with a my 6 inch, then for a month or so i use the 8 inch, and i finish off the season with the 6 inch.

i just drill two 6 inch holes beside each other and chisel out the rest to make a 12x6 inch hole, perfect for the clam 2000.

now on lac 31miles we make a huge hole in a triangular shape. we take my friend gas auger, and punch 6 holes to make a triangle. it's the craziest fishing i have ever done. you are sight fishing, and you can see the smelt swimming away from the predators. we go there for white fish, but you'll always see lakers swimming around chasing those tiny smelt.

but like others have said, stay away from the drill bit thing. what are you doing to do when it breaks or battery runs out after drilling half way through the ice. makes for a crappy day.
