2 years ago this month i got myself a great gps.....garmin 60cx...at abit more then 500$.. ..its a great gps tons off great features.


but if you guys are looking for one..tha same gps is now in special.at canadian tire for

249$ this next weekend..... ..man this is 1/2 off what i pay 2 years ago...its 120$ off.wow

Thanks Joco. I may just have to pick that up. I have been thinking about getting one for awhile. Can you load map data into it, hydrographic data etc.? sounds like a great deal for sure.

I have been thinking about getting one those as well.Do you need to buy a card with the info on it?

It comes with a 64MB Micro SD card which should give you enough capacity to load at least the whole province of Ontario topo maps. You can get the free topo maps at http://www.ibycus.com/ibycustopo/

Let me know if anyone has questions. I have loaded these maps on both the GPSMAP60 models and the Colorado 300.

Would you point me a link or basic steps to import it into a GPS please ? The map is 3.2 G and GPS can only load 64M. Thanks.

What you need to do is load these maps into MapSource (the software that comes from Garmin). Once loaded you can export the areas you need to the GPS by highlighting them in mapsource and clicking on "Send To GPS". The 3.2GB of maps includes all of the topo data for all of Canada and is made up of over 7,000 individual maps. You only need to export the ones you need for the area you are traveling in. Each small map is about .5MB and you may only need a few of these to cover a very large travel area.

I'll take you up on the info/questions offer. I have a Garmin GPS and the software but have been unable to load the maps from the site you suggested. The format of the file is incompatible with the software.

Do you know of any other sites that offer similar maps and downloads? Have you had any issues similar to mine?

What model of Garmin do you have? Not every model supports mapping. I've loaded the Ibycus and other maps to my 60csx without any problems.

If your unit does support mapping and you're still having problems then make sure you're using the latest version of MapSource and make sure your unit has the latest software/firmware installed. Both of these are available on the Garmin website.

If anyone else is looking for a solid hand held GPS and debating picking one of these up, don't hesitate. At $249 this week you can't go wrong. I've had mine for a couple years and used it for everything from in car nav, finding my way in... and out of the bush, even loaded up the fishing hotspots Hydrographics to use out on Quinte. Trak Maps has a pretty good selection of Hydrographic maps available for Ontario and Quebec lakes that work with Garmin GPS units. Just be careful, the detail and accuracy on some of the Ontario lakes is not the best.

I have a Garmin GPSmap 60Cx. I seem to have fixed the problem. I had to remove and reload the software on my computer to get it to open the topo maps from the site listed above and it worked like a charm. Something didn't load right I guess. Now, works great.

Now I'm wondering if there are some free navigation or bathymeteric charts out there. IF anyone knows of a site or, if there is a database that I can build my own from please let me know. I can't wait to get out on the water with this unit and track some fishing spots and trends.

if anyone likes google earth, you can download a program called dnrgarmin from USGS, it will allow you to download the files from your gps and a save them as a shapefile (for ArcGIS) or as a kml file for google earth, then all your waypoints or routes will open right on the aerial photographs in google earth.

I've been thinking about getting a GPS lately as well, something to document all those fish I see and then forget about.
