Carp -- why so popular.

I do not wish to start controversy but I am somewhat at a lost over the recent interest in carp these last few decades. When I was a kid fishing on the detroit river for carp we would destroy them if we could, since we were told that they eat the eggs of bass and walleye. They also seem to crowd out sport fish and take over ponds and rivers since they seem to be prolific breeders and tough as grandma. We even refered to them as garbage fish along with suckers. Am I missing something.

there tons off fun to catch and they are a strong and tuff fish.

and in europe carp is like very very popular..actualy if you look for the most popular sportfishing.its carp fishg.
yep if you are talking world wide carp fishing is way more popular then bass or walleye way more not even close .

Man do they every fight!
I caught my first one this summer, only about a 12 pounder, but was a heck of a fight! Way more fighting power than bass.
Next year i'll be trying for some carp again

Hi Joseph - what part of Essex County did you grow up in ? I'm originally from Amherstburg, and we used to also catch a lot of Carp in the Spring - I had even nicked named my sister-in-law "Carp Catcher" as she really enjoyed the fight they put up. Sadly she is no longer with us.

personnally I don't target them but I can see the attraction. big fish, fairly easy to catch and lots of opportunities. I was speaking to some Brits that were on carp vacation down by Iroquois this Fall. They told me that this area is regarded as the premier carp fishing location in the world so maybe we are missing out on something?? They did get the idea of bass fishing when I took them for a quick run in the Ranger though.

I like how you lumped suckers in there too. Not liking carp because they're "not native" is one thing, but suckers...c'mon!! To some people anything thats not classified as a "gamefish" is automatically garbage, and it is this moronic attitude that leads to ling being left to die on the ice, or gar having their beaks broken before being thrown back...

Are u saying that u agree with killing fish for no reason???
I agree with wolfman, people who kill native fish just cause they dont ''like them'' are petty much being d!cks.
