Mac Bay - Just for Fun and Giggles!

I have ice fished 4 times in my life. The last time was Saint Anne de la Perade.

I wanted to try some local water this year. So my bud and I hit the bay.

We are hillbilly style guys.. we have wives and kids and a working class income... so... this is our auger;

This is the hole/trench we made after only about 10 minutes;

Hard to tell by the photo, but it was about two and a half feet long by about eight inches wide. The ice (smack dab in the middle of the bay) was about 9 or 10 inches thick.

This shot was taken about 20 minutes before the rain started.

Once the rain started, we pulled up the shell. Cozy and warm, but the fishing was slow. We shoved out by 3:15pm.

Not going to over do it for the first day! We are going to head out again this week, and give it an honest shot. Minnows and everything!!

hope u left something to mark the hole when u left

... someone may get a soaker or worse

Mmmmm... what do ice fishers normally do with their holes when they are finished?

Like all the other holes that were around, other than the mound of snow and ice taken from the hole left beside it I did nothing to mark the spot.

You should have stuck some branches in the hole before leaving especially that the weather is not ice making weather.

Normally nothing, but one this size (from your desciption) is bigger than most

If I catch anyone in that hole, they will not go to waste. I have a big freezer and I BBQ all winter long. Stupid people are in season all year long.

Branches just would have camouflaged the hole and I might end up catching a smart person instead.

I didn't even read all of his remark in the 1st posting, if that hole is the size he is saying and he didn't mark the hole. A small kid can go right thru the hole ..

Muskymatt I have no idea why you would find that funny???? What if it was one of your kids??? Wouldn't be that funny. The best times for icefishing we all know is at low light sunup and sundown. So under lowlight conditions that hole would not be seen like any other holes until you step in it.

Branches don't camouflage the holes only a stupid person(you started calling other people names) would think that a tree grows in the middle of a lake.

There are way too many people being way too serious/anal way too often here on Fish-Hawk WB.

Which has made FH way too painfull to visit way too much.

I'd be more concerned about getting hit by an A-hole driver on the way to the ice.

Don't matter though ....you guy's will beat this to death here and drive away more decent folks who want to have a decent place to go and learn about fishing..

Good job folks...time to step back and think about common decency for a bit

He mentioned that he icefished only 4 times and at StAnne de la Perades . We were just trying to let him know that the way they fish for tomcods and the way we icefish here is completely different.

That's what was our intention when we mentioned it, so that he could come to Fish-Hawk and learn about icefishing. It doesn't really matter if you like it or not Matt, a 2.5 feet by 8" hole should not be left unmarked. It's just common decency to other fisherman using Mac Bay.

@ WalleyeBoss I understand your concern. I would not want to see anyone go through the ice. I highly doubt that it will happen due to my hole, as it is quite noticeable... Looks like Moses might have made it himself (A little seasonal Red Sea parting reference there for you!) But measure twice cut once, look both ways before crossing, always wear a condom, rinse and repeat, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, wipe until the paper stays white, always wear clean underwear... all that good stuff. I will keep it all in mind. Gotta be careful!

I was using plastics... perhaps I should use minnows.

I am unsure as to the legal aspects of fishing with LIVE minnows.... Where is it legal and where is it not?

Live minnows are legal anywhere on the Ottawa river, Zone 25 Quebec regs.

hey i cant blame cprince

i made a 2' x 2 ' live well on the ice and didnt mark anything!

as said previously when you go on the ice prepare yourself for these things.

I have never cut a hole out of the ice that big but if I did it would be marked for sure. I know of a few fellas who had there boots swallowed last year from this and it can end ones day very quick. If you think a soaked boot and foot is bad, imagine having twisted a leg or ankle falling in
