Oh what really got me in the article was the statement...
"While workers at the facility were able to stop the leak, they were unable to determine its cause. "

Unable to determine a leak when dealing with reactors.. if they can;t detemine the cause what is in place to prevent future situations..

I won't need glow jigs.. just isotopes on the hook! Eyes will learn to love em...

Its just sad fellas.. that the Feds are pouring more money into this place give the problems they have had. Faulty valve a couple years ago which could have released millions of radio active material into the big O..

I was wondering the same thing. Not too many answers - too early.

In wastewater treatment, the sludge is what is leftover following the dewatering process. Dewatering removes the water, which gets treated then sent back to the river. The sludge remains. If there is radioactive material in the sludge, it may easily have originated in a solid or semi-solid that entered the system within Ottawa, rather than from the Chalk River facility. But it could be from the water upstream of Ottawa...

Regardless of the source, the treated water from the plant is on it's way past McLaurin towards Montreal... so downstream from Pickard is of concern for certain, Upstream waters before Ottawa also of concern IF the source was not from within the confines of Ottawa...

Radioactivity in waste water sludge....what isotopes?

Could be from a hospital using isotopes for medicinal purposes.

Could be from industry in Ottawa.

Who knows what kind of things people have in their houses and flush?

Maybe educate yourself first before jumping to conclusions. The media sensationalizes to sell.

I would worry more about all the medications that pass thought waste treatment centers and end up in fish.

Everyone is quick to point the finger at AECL, but tell me, why hasn't the media reported that radiation has been found at Petawawa, Pembroke, and other communities upstream of Ottawa and directly downstream from Chalk River.

I have fished this portion of the Ottawa for 30+ years, never caught any 3 eyed fish or any fish with sores, glowing scales, etc. on them. What's sad is the comments made based on what the media reports.

If you're that concerned, practice C & R, think how good the Ottawa River fishery would be in a few years if more would do it. Better yet, write some politicians and see what kind of response you get.

Maybe stop jumping to conclusions and educate yourselves about the other junk being dumped in the water.

The minute you say "radiation" everyone starts getting scared it weapon grade plutonium etc....

Chances are its residue isotope from a hospital. But so many things contain trace radiation.....such as some household appliances.

.... bananas, table salt, television screens, your basement, granite countertops, natural and propane gas, tap water, potatoes and on and on and on for ever.

In fact, people themselves contain and emit ionizing radiation to the tune of approx 4msv/yr. Still sleeping next to your wife?


People are afraid of what they don't understand.

But thats not an excuse. Nothing going into the river almost always better than something regardless of what it is.

We have a big problem in the river and I think that them not reacting to it this instant is being very naiive !

Are there not natural Uranium deposits in the Ottawa Valley? I know of one at Sharbot Lake that is about to be opened up.

Perhaps radiation is natural in our water, hell we all eat food that are bombarded with Microwaves almost every day! I would not be to concerned about this.

The walleye I had for dinner last night sure was tasty!!

Its all good views.. and yes the news tend to stretch things.. however it is still a fact that Chalk River has had a couple close calls and there is no denying that.
