Lady luck, big splake and walleye

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Lady luck, big splake and walleye

Post by S.M.05 »

After Chef Luke cooked up what looked to be one hell of a dinner for his valentine he was given permission to go with me the next morning and visit a couple of his other ladies.

Well Lady Luck was sitting out on the front steps with cold toes in the morning when I woke up so I told her to come in and warm up. (Lady Luck is not a fictional character but actual girl found crying on steps at 3:55 am with cold toes  ).
Long story short I told her to come in side and warm her toes while she waited for her ride to show up, and with that good deed luck was to be had on the ice.

Luke showed up right on time and we headed of to a lake just outside Bancroft for some impressive splake fishin. This lake was home to the big buck Luke had landed last yr. so we had our hopes up.

7am and we were headed to our spot on the lake. Luke had the Jiffy started up and was drilling holes while I sounded them until till we had the depth and structure we were after.
7:15am we are dropping in our set lines and before I get the chance to set the flag a fish pulls the line from my hand and stills the minnow on me.
"Luke I just missed one on the drop" I yell over to him.
"B.S." Luke says.
So I quickly throw another minnow and set up my line and wham flag up. After a few words out of Luke’s mouth that we won’t repeat I set the hook and ITS ON. Luke is on top of things as usual and he can see the gleam in my eyes cause it’s a hog. After a good battle I get the head pointed up the hole and Luke scoops it like a pro.

P.B. Splake.

After that we start jiggn them up like mad, that is until the flag goes up on my honey hole. Luke this time, much better versed is giggling like a little school girl and saying unbelievable cause he can see that same gleam in my eye and knows its not quite 8:30 yet and I have another big splake on the hook. Luke doesn’t fail me again ensures this lady makes it up on the ice.

New current P.B. splake.

11am both of us still jiggin them up like mad and the flag goes up again in the honey hole. In true fishn bud fashion I tell Luke it’s his turn. We run over and the fish is peeln line like crazy so Luke sets the hook on the fish. Unreal….. Luke has that gleam in his eyes cause there’s another biggn on the hook. The fish is pounding away under the ice and just as Luke gains some ground on it, its gone.
Luke was playing it proper but the splake cut the 8# fireline with its teeth nothing he could have done about. It had to be a monster. Never thought we need a leader for splake  .
11:58am Luke caught the last one jiggin and we had our 5 each.
Best day ice fishn ever. :D

Limit of splake. 8)

Did I say day, its only noon and I know Luke loves his walleye.
It doesn’t take much to convince Luke into trying a little backwoods walleye lake I have been telling him (the one that got away) stories about.

2:30pm we arrive at the lake set up our lines and sit down to Luke’s treat of Top Dogs and potato and mac salad. 8)

4:30pm Luke showing off his walleye skills hooks into a big backwoods lake walleye.

Caught released a couple more small eyes before calling it a perfect day and thanking Lady Luck.

Now that is one awesome report. Great pictures, too. I cannot believe the size of those splake, and that walleye is very impressive to boot!

What a fantastic day. Guess your good deed really did pay off, SMO5.

Thanks for a great read and congrat's on the PB splake. It's easy to see how that fish could be a PB. Wow!

Haha fatluke, I have to admit though that's one of the nicest fish I have ever seen.

Back to Sunday... :)

That was just an unfreakinbelievable day of trouting  Toss in a two new PB fish and a beauty walleye, can't be beat. Great report Mike and thanks fatluke for the quick taste earlier today  Top report by far this year!

Thanks Torpedo I dont usually measure my fish unless I plan on entering them in something and dont even own a scale as I find it takes away from a good fishn story. But if I had to guess she was about 30" and weighed about twenty pounds
