Hey hawkers

I am looking for a place in close proximity to Ottawa that sells worms in bulk. I want to buy about 100 or so + dew worms and would like to try and save a few bucks....and some fishing time

HEY Andrew get yourself a flashlight and a bucket get out there at night after a rain lots of worms on our street but keep your eyes open for others with flashlights they could be burglers!!!!!!

I think that's what I am going to do tonight Mike...I Have got a few PM's suggesting to do the same.

Tipup wait for an night after a fresh rain. 100 worms shouldn't take more than 15 minutes to pick.

pick ur own,best idea!2 boxes of 18 half dead worms cost us 10 bucks! just waitin 4 a rain myself.

I used to take the 'easy' way out..... and pick them up off the roads and driveways after / during a rain

I will gather as many as I can over the next few days and go from there.

Any tips for fattening them up? Tried the Frabill crap and to tell ya the truth, the worms got a lot smaller I was told at LeBarons at the time it was some of the best bedding and food for them I plan on keeping an ample supply of them at the cottage.

you have to be in the right area to get the fat ones... try a golf course. or theres a guy in pembroke that sells flatts of worms think there 10 dozen or somethin...

Getting permission to pick from a golf course/driving range would be the best do-it-yourself method.

Use to use the ground newspaper medium and mix in old chopped up wet leaves for worm storage.

Keep the worms in the 'fridge. Cold worms are pythons.

golf courses are not always the best place to look,they use a lot of fertilizer and weed killers that the worms dont like.can also be tricky keeping lots of them,use good bedding,dont put too many together,take out the dead ones,put dandelion greens for food on top .good trick is to get a thick matting of green moss and put it on top,when u lift it all the livelyest worms will be in it!

I have not kept large quantities of crawlers for a while but when i did I made bedding from a mix of pest moss and potting soil. Peat moss helped retain moisture.
as for food I fed mine almost exclusively on old coffee grounds. they loved it and maybe the cafine made them lively. ha ha

What kind of container would you keep them in???

I actually built a box from plywood and made the bottom out of window screening in order that the rain water could pass through and not flood out the box. the top was part plywood and part screen to allow air flow and some moisture to enter.
I then buried the box in the ground in a shady spot to avoid overheating on those bright sunny days.

Yes, I was always very satisfied with this guy's worms. He lives on Horace Street.

Thats the best way to get worms pick your own on your lawn at night after a little rain and youl get some. Im doing that all the time and keep them in the fridge. Me I use some old coffee cans for worms container and I put some flower bed ground in it and does the trick.
