My wife and I took the kids out fishing last night as they had been asking to go for a while.

We went to a spot I know of that generally holds quite a few different species and decided to fish there.

I ended up catching 2 OOS Bass..a smallie around the 2lb mark and a Largie around the 3lb mark so we decided to move on...

We moved out about 75 yds and the finder just came to life! Walleye everywhere!

However, no matter what we threw out or used the marbles didn't want to play!

The perch, pumpkinseed and crappie did though! Which is good cause this trip was all about the kids!

My daughter got bored and decided to just be content playing with the worms and touching the fish that were caught. My son was much more dilligent!

Unfortunately he had broken his rod just prior to us going out. So we had to let him use an adult rod. We tipped it with a worm and let it sit. Bless his little heart did he ever go banana's whenever something was nibbling his line! No he was using my dads ultra floppy uglystick! So needless to say, unfortunately my son didn't manage a hook-set. But he was more than happy to keep trying!

My wife and I kept catching crappie, pumpkinseed and perch. I even managed 1 good pike! But like I said the kids aren't impressed with big fish, they like little fish as they can hold them. SO we let them put everyone we caught back! There was a fight over which one of them got to release which fish!

I locked into a nice crappie and my son decides that he does not want to put it back, that he wants to eat it and that he wants to show his "Grandma" and "Grandma H"....(My grandmother is visiting from the UK right now)

So we get back to the dock and as soon as he gets off the boat he goes bee-lining for the door with "his" crappie! He even ran into the house with it and it was flapping around!

I filleted it for them and the kids had a nice snack of fried crappie....

My daughter could not stop talking about the trip on the way home and my son happily dozed off on the car ride home....

I can't wait for the next time we go out!

My only regret was that the rod he used was too difficult for him to use. Those Zebco kids ones are junk! He's gone through 2 of them so far!

Can anyone (on a side note to this post) suggest a good rod for kids???
You can see from the pic that he is pretty shrimpy! LOL!

I had my two kids practising casting in the backyard with a rubber lure when they were 5 years old, sitting in those plastic kids Adirondick lawn chairs, with my fishing rods. When they grew older, I bought them other rods and it's been twice now since they replaced them (loss or broken). Now at the age of 17 (twin sister and brother), they still have their rods.

Never did buy those kiddy rods.

Drop me a line..I've got 2 poles at home exactly for that....our kids have outgrown them and prefer to use my high end stuff...

5 foot 2-piece Quantums....No reels though....pick up a cheap Shimano reel and you'll be set....

Let me know...currently they are in the garage sale pile..

Sounds like a good time was had by all.

Whenever I've taken out little ones, I set them up with my ice fishing rods.

Good report and good on you taking the kids out fishing. I had to smile at the picture. I took my 21 year old son out for catfish a couple of times this year and his face has the same look when holding a fish. Of course Dad still gets that look too. As my wife has been known to say "you fishermen are just big kids". She's got that right.

Boy does that bring back fond memories. A lot of good times getting the kids out for a few hrs on the water. They're all grown up now and living far away from mom and dad, but the first grand-child is coming next month. I'll get to relive the old memories with a new generation. Can hardly wait.
