With the laws and whatnot now, I am not sure what I need to be legal in a canoe....
Anyone help me???

Paddle, lifecoat per person,bailer,flashlight,15ft of rope,whistle.

And if you like some that mount an electric trolling motor on your canoe, you'll also need your boat operators card.

waterproof flashlight and make sher it work if it those not its like if you did not had any.not a mandatory but..a big plus)

You need 15m (not feet) of floating rope, a bailer and a pea-less whistle (so it will work when wet). You don't need a waterproof flashlight for a canoe, but it is probably a good idea.

If you rent a canoe, this is what they provide you.

With all of the above, if I'm with a partner, I include a spare paddle which I secure to the yoke with a velcro strap.

ok so this is the first time i hear about a canoe with an electric motor is considered a power boat??

i find that hard to beleive.

so i did a little research of my own.

and no you don't need an operators card for a canoe with motor.

Do I need a licence to operate my boat? ^

Sometimes proof of competency is also referred to as a licence to operate a vessel. The two are not the same. In most instances what people actually want to know about is the requirement to carry proof of competency, as required under the Competency of Operators of Pleasure Craft Regulations

A pleasure craft licence is the set of identification numbers displayed on a boat. Pleasure craft fitted with a motor of 10 hp or more are required to be licensed. See Section Three for more information on licensing and registration.

Currently, proof of competency is required if you fall into one of two categories:

You operate a pleasure craft fitted with a motor AND are born after April 1, 1983; or,
You operate a pleasure craft fitted with a motor that is under 4m (13 feet) in length (regardless of age).
If you were born before April 1, 1983 and operate a pleasure craft fitted with a motor that is 4 m and over in length, you will require proof of operator competency by September 15, 2009.

No, unlike a driver's licence, the operator card cannot be revoked and is good for life.

What is "proof of operator competency"? ^

unless you're putting a 10 hp motor in the back.

no need for a licence if you have an electric motor attached to a canoe.

The the way the regulations are written you need an operators card to operate any "motorized" pleasure craft. The quote you listed is correct in that if your boat has a motor of 10 hp or greater you are require to license your boat (not to be confused with the Operators Card).

I agree that simply putting a minkota on a canoe should not require an operators card, however the only documentation that I've been able to find w.r.t. this simply states "motor", which it unfortunately falls into.

..go figur

i hate to say this but this is a major.bs(sorry forb words) but if you look at this..the way people past the test and how its been done on the net they dont care..they just want are $$$

but look closely if you have a 4m (13.1 ft) canoe.or plus.you are ok until the 15 sept dead line.for the card.

unles you dont have the age restriction.
