Don't let someone new drive your boat, especially if the balls are down 120 feet, just in case they drive the boat into 80 feet depths.
Lesson learned the hard way, almost sunk the boat, and ripped the transom in half.

Almost sunk the boat - really?? Wow...
Tip #1
Make sure your clutches are adjusted to allow the spool to slip if you hang up...
Tip #2
If the bottom comes up quicker than your retrieve rate, fastest way out is to hit the throttle and the ball will rise.
Tip #3
Run a jet diver below the ball... then attach your release to the back of the diver. That way you can get nearer to the bottom without dragging the cannonball. Diver will not hang up as readily, it will trip and rise. You will see the line position change if the diver is tripped.
Tip #4
Slower is better for most laker fishing... drag a sea anchor behind the boat if your troll speed is 2 fast. 1mph is my target troll speed for lakers.
