Easy question for locals

i have been messing with google maps and the topo maps for my gps,
and there are some really small water bodies that actually have lake names, there are larger bodies that are not named, I presume that the un named ones are just big shallow ponds or wetlands, why are some named, for example Hughes lake east of Tamworth Ontario. Is it named cause it has fish in it? Hughes looks to be about the size of a barnyard dugout, lol. Is it based on depth? or what? anyone know.
Thanks
