July 2009 Port Alberni Sockeye Salmon Update

Just back from Vancouver Island and a very successful 2-days of fishing at Port Alberni with my best fishing buddy, my brother, Mike. Sockeye run was very active, with fish averaging 4 lbs - the largest estimated between 6 & 7 lbs.

Sockeye is the tastiest of the salmon family and, to fry one up within hours of landing it, you'd swear you had died and gone to heaven.

Port Alberni has some great sockeye fishing...couple more weeks and the chinooks will be there. Those Dungness are making my mouth water...never knew they climb trees!!!

Did you catch those also?

My brother, Mike is a commercial fisherman who sails out of Tuff City (Tofino) - he cooked them on the boat on the way in at 4:00 am and we had them for lunch. Cape Breton lobster is tops (I'll be down home for that at the end of the month) but, Dungeness Crab is a close second.
