Charleston Lake Fishing Could Be No Better!

Just got back from our annual two week fishing vacation on Charleston Lake and as usual the lake continues to get better each year! First thanks to Wolfe for the info on Susan Shields and her cottage. When I found out that we lost ours we had rented for years when it sold I was devistated but Wolfe came through with a great suggestion. This year we were down one angler as my youngest daughter was attending summer sessions at Virginia Tech but I had my wife and daughter #2 (out of three) along as always. From the first cast it was nothing but FISH, FISH, and more FISH! We started out SM fishing and it was non stop action. The only negative thing to say about the SM fishing this year is that it was void of 5lb fish as in past years. The largets was my daughters 4lb 12 oz fish and then my wife and I filled in with many more in the 3.5 - 4lb range. I will say that my wife had one that went WELL over 5 right next to the boat and yours truly botched the net job  . I will probably not live that one down for years but we know where he is and next year he is in trouble. The LM bass were also eager to bite with one evening trip targeting them with nonstop action from start to finish. This year we also tried some pike fishing and my wife had the largest of the trip at 4lbs 8ozs until the last day when I landed one at 8lb 1 oz. Again, not making my wife the happiest camper beating her record out on the last day! We finished up with lake trout that were also eager to bite ( all native fish, no fin clips). We caught many in the 2lb range with the largest one I landed at 6lbs 2ozs! All in all I think it is safe to say that we have learned the lake and I'm sure it will continue to be a great lake for years to come. Our only negative experience of the trip occured while taking our boat out at the public launch in Charleston. There was a guy and his wife behind us and he was using the worst language I have ever heard in my life as he screamed at her. I felt really sorry for her (as I'm sure everyone else did) as nobody deserves to be yelled at like that. I can only chalk this up to those idiots we all come across in life we wish we hadn't! The photos below are just a few of the 242 my daughter took!

Nice work and great trip. I can not wait to be able to do this stuff with my son. I know I regret not spending more time with my family but I am glad you have it down pat.

Looks like an amazing trip with the family and the fish really cooperated with you!

I'm heading up there tomorrow for a few days. I can only hope to do as good as you.

I was reminded by my wife that I forgot to post that her LM in the photo was 4lbs 2ozs weighed with our digital scale. I needed to add this since I botched her net job and beat out her largest pike.

prcab,

I read this report earlier, but just had some time to respond.

I'm so glad you and your family enjoyed the accommodations -- they really are quite comfortable cottages and well placed to get you right on the lake.

Looks like you had your traditional family fun and fishing vacation. Great bunch of fish, fun pic's and smiles.

Guess you'll be back to Charleston next year! 8)

W.

PS: we don't catch many crappies there, but I guess they're around. Tyler caught a small one off the boathouse this past spring.
