hey all. i usually fish cranks, spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. i keep hearing about all the senko type baits and have never had the patience or luck to use them. anyone have any tips for someone just starting into soft plastics?

Just be sure to hang on tight........Kidding. The advantage that I find soft plastics provide is a slow erratic presentation that produces more strikes on the whole. Plus you get the added advantage of better feel when the strikes occur and the ability to reach holes that your regular crank bait and lure cannot. When starting out, I'd suggest targetting structures such as rocks, docks and slop. Tip up, line taut and take it slow. As for what (for me In Sourthern ON, anyway) to use, I prefer berkley power bait for worms (tequila sunrise and pumkinseed) and tubes (chartruese-brown/pumkinseed) and watermelon coloured yum dingers w a wacky rig. Pumkin-chartreuse and pure white is nice for walleye/SMB this time of year when I go to grubs.

Congrats for choosing plastic bait. I think you'll find it rewarding.

asome thanks for the info. where abouts in SW ontario im in windsor. any thoughts on rigging or presentation? im thinking texus draged slowly over weeds

I'm located Cambridge area. As for presentation it's all good. In your neck of the woods in Windsor I'd throw just about anything in that great water you've got there. Isn't there some big small mouth that come out of the river there? If I had a choice, I'd go Texas.....Maybe that's another topic for a survey...Texas or Carolina or Wacky...etc.

lol ya my lovely pea soup water does produce some monster bass. thanks for the info guys. how fast or deep should i be using them (keep in mind my water has a retarded fast current)

Black Gulp sinking minnow, wacky or texas rigged. My buddy swears by them, caught 5-8 largie in Loughborough. I've had some luck with them as well but tend towards texas rig because the gulp liquid is slippery and they slide through the O ring. I don't hook through the plastic because it's usually a one fish per worm deal. I don't mind losing a worm to a big fish but I hate losing $1 worms to dink fish.

I also like rainbow trout coloured senkos and almost any black with a fleck. Senkos wacky rigged with a rubber O ring can get you multiple fish per senko.

have a bunch of depth available between 30 and 1 FOW. typically i cast a rockey slope from shore(0) to about 22FOW with cranks then fish a THICK well formed weededge with about 1 foot from top of weeds to surface with a buzzbiat then i fish the outside edge at about 8fow with a spinner if all else fails i throw spinnerbiats to breakwalls in about 8-10FOW looking to add a slpwer approach to my arsenal for when the bis is slow. hear nothing but good about a texas rigged senko over weeds and around structure but never had much luck with them and never seem to want to try for long enough to learn and respect them. also never really understood how to give them the proper action

I would have to second that statement !

I started using plastics more last year, they weren't something i normally used, the 5 inch black senko soon became my favorite tool for bass. I usually rig Wacky style with the o ring. I no longer use any live bait.

good stuff im gunna pick some up soon. as for morning i have some twistertail and lizards and what no (you know the kind assorted made by god knows who) and a pack of black with white tip YUM dingers. any thoughs on them (gotta hold me over till thurs when i can afford a pack or 2 of senkos.
