Lowrance HDS or Humminbird 9xx ?
Lowrance HDS or Humminbird 9xx ?
I was considering purchasing HDS-7 but many people
discourage me to do so and suggested to get Humminbird 997c SI instead.
Apparently the HDS menu is very painful to navigate and 997c SI is much better value
(not to mention the side/bottom scan and substantial price drop since 998 is ready for retail )
Any opinions ?
Thanks

I would suggest finding out what options you must have and then work within your budget. That seems to be the deciding factor 99.9% of the time. They both make nice units. You are going to get people who love Lowrance and people who love Hummingbird (the old Ford vs Chevy debate). If side scan is something you have to have then Hummingbird was the first company to come out with it, however Lowrance has just introdcued it (unsure of the price). As for the new menus on the Lowrance, yes they are different but after using them for a day you will get used to them quickly enough. Good luck with your purchase.

Lifeisfun,
The HDS menu system is no more painful than any windows software application you use on a daily basis. No matter what product you purchase if you need to do any advanced editing of settings you are going to have to dig into the menus and in some situations manufactures have hidden menus.
On December 7th I am doing a free Lowrance Sonar Seminar at Turpin, so drop by if you would like to see the features of a Lowrance HDS with real on the water recordings and images. I will also have an HDS 8 setup for people to check out.
I will cover many features that will apply to any sonar on the market, so it will be good educational information that will make you a better angler and also help when shopping for a new sonar.

Sale at Gander Mtn - Watertown
Gander Mtn in Watertown have the HDH-5 on sale for 524.98 and the HDS-7 on sale for 749.98.
I calculate you could land back in Canada with an HDS-7 for around $950.00 (CDN) - all taxes and legal with no smuggling at the border.
That's quite a deal.

lowrance hds or humminbird 9xx
I just replaced my humminbird with an HDS 5 and could not be happier... the HDS is easy to operate and the menu seems quite logical and practical.

guys....that price at Gander Mountain IS correct...and its an error on their part that they WILL honor today and possibly tomorrow but its going to be corrected SOON. So if you're considering this, call them and pay for it over the phone and THEN worry about getting there to pick it up. The HDS 7 LAKE INSIGHT WITH TRANSDUCER is $808.09 with NY sales tax in ($749 before tax). HDS 5 is $524.99 for Lake insight w/transducer
I know they will take the credit card payment over the phone because i just did it for someone else....bought them an HDS 7
