Hi All,

I was thinking that winter has gone on long enough. My question is this. When do you start getting your gear ready for spring?

I started this week by purchasing some 15lb. power pro for the jerk bait reel, 12lb. pline cxx copolymer for the crank bait reel, and some 10lb. Pline Halo fluorocarbon for the wacky, tube reel. I also picked up the Rapala super line scissors. The one thing I could't find was some 14lb Seagar leader material to use with my15lb. power pro.

I think I might wait a couple of weeks before spooling them up. Come on spring...

Anyone else out there fussing with there gear trying to shorten the winter?

I have noticed out at my store (Paddletales) in the last couple of weeks there has been an increase of traffic of guys that just need there soft water fix. Everyone is looking for the new stuff (a big order is on its way and should be here this week) and want to talk bass fishing. Its been great for me because I have the bass fishing blues pretty bad too.

its crazy because i was just geting all my stuff and i cant wait for this snow and ice to go away I just hope i have better luck then i did last year

I usually start goin thru my gear in march, as soon as it's warm enough I go to local lakes and test ouy any new lures or rods and reels. I go to Gananoque Lake at the end of may for 5 days so by mid april I'm ready to go, it's an awefully long wait!

Sent my first big order to Cabellas last week. Still need a bunch of stuff, like all new rods, but I'll be picking those up locally.

I am constantly getting stuff ready for open water. "getting stuff ready" basically means buys lots of stuff everytime I set foot in Canadian Tire. I use one of my smaller spinning reels for ice fishing as well but once mid march rolls around I will take all my reels apart and clean them for the up coming open water season. The only thing I don't do is spool up my reels with fluro until just before my first fishing trip just to avoid memory.

ahhh spring time, my favorite time of the year....not because the fishing is the best (although it sure isn't bad) but because .... IT'S TIME ... finally ...

my first species we fish, in open water, is the brown trout and cat fish. If your not near any big water brown trout, i'm sure your close to some channel cats.

find your first open water area's, with high current, get some cut sucker, and toss it in...use a barrel swivel 2 way with an egg weight and octopus or circle hook.

If your near big water, come april the salmon and browns should be hoppin'. get on those shorelines and pull your stick baits around. Not long after, the american side is open for trophy smallie stuff....

I have been buying lures and jigs all winter. I have been gathering pieces and parts to mod my boat... and I bought another boat that needs a grind, seal and paint job. I will start that in March!!

I need fishing line next!

I have been practicing flipping (totally new to me!) into buckets and between hay bails by tying a chunk of pig ear on to the end of some 20lb braid with a baitcaster I got from a friend... driving the barn cats nuts!!!

The only thing I don't like so far about the bait caster is the drag doesn't sing when the big calico old lady mouser runs into the hay bails with it... she is as hard to pull out of there as the 4.15lb bass was to pull out of the lilly pads in Mac Bay... I always seem to loose them when they get within about 20 feet of me though!!

Before anyone gets their PETA panties twisted into their cookie hole... there is NO hook... just a pig's ear tied to the line!!! (I have to admit, I was thinking about putting on a stinger for those short strikes!!)

Speaking of such things... where can I get my shimano reels tuned up? I have wrecked too many trying to tune up to do it with any confidence on my own!

I am in Alcove/Wakefield area and my wife goes to Riverside/Walkley daily and I go into Gatineau/Hull area a coupe of times a week.

What kind of $ are we talking about too? (Just a tune up... no real work to be done on them!)

Dude i'll be taking a couple of mine in for a tune up soon ...i'll even drive up to the Funny Farm and pick them up if you want...I'll be taking them to Reel to Reel plus in Stittsville Area....

Twenty some odd dollars each...well well worth it ...comes back in new condition...
