I wonder if those GULP minnows ( in the bucket full of smelly juice) would work better in the winter for walleye jigging ? Has anyone ever tried this ?

The gulp minnows have worked well for me in the past ... either a couple whole minnows tipping a spoon or jigging rap (for walleye) or a tail on a small jig or spoon (for perch) ... in fact I landed a 10+ pound walleye on Quinte last weekend on 2 - 2.5" Emerald Shiner gulp minnows on a 1/4oz Northland Fire-Eye Minnow. Not sure if I can say they are better than real minnows or pieces of salted minnows ... but I can tell you that when I missed a fish on Gulp ... the plastic held to the hook allowing me to fish after the missed strike without having to re-tip! When walleye are only really active for 1-2 hours minutes count! It was bad enough I had to stop fishing to keep landing my buddies fish for him!
note the spoon tipped with 2 gulps! Proof is in the pudding![/img]

I wouldn't waste your money on plastics when it comes to ice fishing for walleye..are they successful? sometimes..are they consistantly successful? not at all.. your better off tipping your hook with 3 live minnows..thats what me, my buddies and we make all our clients do...when you do miss a bite and the fish takes a minnow or 2..it generally stays there ..and usually we're quick enough to re bait and send the lure back down in time for it to strike again...we've proven it MANY times...I faught a 13 pounder a week ago half way to the hole and it got off..sent my bait down quick and she slammed it.

It is hard to argue with the Prince as I have seen pictures of his success and stories all over the place ... perhaps it is enough to say that if you can't get to the bait shop (needing to be on your spot for first light) ... it is better to tip ANY lure with something and have some faith that Gulps are a good option. My buddies produced really well tipping with pieces of salted minnows last outing (better than myself). Last year we were informed by a guide that all he used was Gulp Minnows ... this year the same guide swears by the live minnows ...
Having limited (but successful) experience on Quinte I am still confused by these fish ... they seem to appear out of nowhere ... some fly by without even a glance at bait while others linger to check it out but later move on and some smack the crap out of a bait first time ... compare that to the various anglers who swear by Mr. Champs, Swedish Pimples, Buckshots, Jiggin Raps ... of all shapes colors and sizes (and when I say sizes ... Hawg Hunter showed us his lures of choice and I swear he was using 2/0 saltwater hooks and by his account SUCCESSFULLY) ...
is it the bait and how it was tipped or how it is being presented OR is it the case of some are on the feed and some are not? The trick to catching them ... is being near where they move to and from for the 2-3 hours that they show themselves on the screen ? I dont know how else to explain how everyone that fishes Quinte has a different "favorite bait size color and configuration! It is amazing to me when you can catch a 11lb walleye on a jigging rap sized to catch panfish!!!! Even more amazing is how you can catch a 10" walleye on a lipless crankbait that is 1/4 of its size! and lets not forget the fish that are caught on spoons big enough to anchor an ice hut! I cant be the only one confused and amazed by these creatures
God its fun though isn't it!????
