Crappie Fishing @ Long Island Locks

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Crappie Fishing @ Long Island Locks

Post by Canmoore »

Hey there, I have heard that Long Island in a Manotick is a good place to catch crappie. Just wondering if there is any truth to this, and where is the best place? Above the locks, or below?

Me and my girlfriend went fishing at the locks in the fall. We fished Below the large locks, the water was so shallow, that all we caught was weeds. There was alot of people fishing there also...but i could not see how. It was like throwing your bait into a thick soup of decaying weeds...

Above the large locks was deeper, but we did not catch anything.

We also fished under the smaller lock, it looked really promising, but again nothing.

Also, would any of you eat a fish out of that stretch of the Rideau? Thanks

I have fished there a half dozen times. Up, down, all around, morning noon and nite. My better half caught a perch once, while I tried everything besides worms. No luck. I was after carp or pike. No luck. I would eat a few crappy out of there. Not too often though.

I forget the name of the road, but basically when you drive through Manotick, and as you are leaving. (coming from Ottawa) You will see a large sign on the left hand side of the road (or side of the road facing the river). That says Long Island park.

There is a parking lot, and trails that lead you to a huge lock, if you pass that lock, there will be a smaller lock. I was there in the fall, and there was a dead walleye, maybe a day old at the bottom of the small lock, in the grass.

Aparantly you can catch Musky hear also, because when we were there in the fall, to woman with heavy duty rods, were casting perch hooked on large trebbles, under a massive bobber.

They never caught anything while we were there.

There are lots of Crappie there, not this early though. I have luck in the fall on the high side but only late at night, after midnight. Very light line and 1/32 oz jig head tipped with a worm or tail end of a Gulp Alive Minnow.

You might even catch a walleye or two. Below the dam there is Walleye as well and of course sun fish and a few small cats.

Crappie are above the dam in fairly good numbers but once again only at night, if the underwater lights are on there would be quite a bit of action. If there are no lights at all, underwater or overhead go home. The crappie feed on the bugs that the lights attract, the crappie are also quite shallow.

Good luck only keep a few enough for an apetizer, please try not to make a meal and fill your freezer with crappie. This area is heavily preassured and we would like to keep in as a fun place to go. I find late at night after a gig with the band, fishing here to be very relaxing and peaceful.

I have not been to the locks, I was just asking. I do not plan on starting to fish for panfish and 'pouts untill at least april.

Thanks for the info!! Don't worry, I will not keep anything from this area. I really like this area, very calm.

I took my girlfriend hear, not to fish, just to walk and relax in October. We sat at the end of the pier. As hundreds of Geese came in to night over below the lock.

It was amazing, seeing groups of 5-30 geese swood down over our heads... it was so loud, yet so peaceful!!
