What do you use. I've always used some kind of expensive super-steel (not sure the name, but i'v ebeen drinking tonight so it's all kind of a blur)...

Reading other related posts there are some expensive tackle at risk to these toothy critters... what do you all like to use for pike lures?

6-pack wire leader at either wally world or Cant tire. costs like $4 for 6 and you can choose black or silver and various sizes. Mine can get all knareled up but never fail. If you tie them to the line proper, they wont fail. snap swivels on the end connect to your lure.

Titanium, or homemade fluro leader at 100 pound test. If your not fishing waters with trophies you could probably get away with 80 pounds test.

I think you might be using Titanium leaders. They are excellent but you play for em.

I have used Florocarbon leaders for quite a few years while fishing pike. Seaguar makes a good leader, but you will need at least 40lb test. I just noticed on the home page there are floro leaders posted with swivels attached, me I just tie on 3ft straight to the main line using uni knots.

Anyone using Floro for Muskies? Nips?

I make fluoro leaders for muskies and fluoro will work well for pike as well. Make sure that you are using leader material and not line. There is a real difference. The fluoro leader material is a lot more abrasion resistant than the line.

If you are not fishing trophy waters then you can go lighter. 40 or 50 lb fluoro will likely be enough. With leader material that light, don't crimp, tie the swivels and snaps to the leader. The time to crimp is when you are using material over 100 lb.

I would use a polymer or improved clinch knot.

You need to make sure that you check your leader constantly for nicks and abrasions.

If you are going to use those cheapies from CT or Walmart, at least change out the snap for a good one, like a String-ease, and change your leaders often.

I buy a spool of 40lbs test Seaguar leader material and tie my own. In previous posts, 40lbs or 60lbs was the status quo, but you can't really go too big I suppose since the stuff is virtually invisible under water. I've never been broken off with 40lbs though.

double uni, to go from floro to the braid

I just bought swivels and snap-swivels and made my own leaders ranging in length from 8" to about 18" with 40lbs seaguar leader material. Less time consuming on the water than tying uniknots.

45lb black nylon coated homemade steel leaders of 9 to 10 inches.

I've seen what pike can do to Scuro's own 100lb floro leaders, and so has he. They'll never do that to steel. They're an aggressive fish that floro isn't needed for. Don't take chances with your trophy fish.

I agree with you moosebunk, there is no need to use floro with pike, they are aggressive enough to just use steel leaders

That is what I use two.......
Just go to Bass Pro and get them (oh thats right you dont have any) Yeah I guess Wal Mart would be good! What dont they have!!!! I use swivels on mine so they almost never work! lol
Just any size debating on how big the pike you are targeting are.....
