I've got my boat outta storage, and am itching to get out..I haven't trout fished in yeaaarrrsss, and have never done it around here. I was thinking of heading to Muskrat Lake maybe.

I was looking at the MNR stocking reports, and Mosque lake sounded OK..but from whatI can see there are extra road fees and what not you have to pay to access the lake I think?

anyone have any lake/river recommendations that they would like to share for a newbie trout fisherman around ottawa?

What is this Mosque Lake you refer to?????

Getting in to Mosque Lake does indeed require a "Road Access Pass", even though somewhat contradicts the "public access" requirement for the MNR stocking programs.

It sounds as if you require a launch for your boat? If this is indeed the case you're going to find your lake options severely limited. It's probably a good bet that you'll find a boat launch on any of the lake trout lakes, however the rainbow and brookie lakes are not typically "trailer" friendly. I guess it would depend on how far you're willig to lug your boat to get to the water?

how near does it have to be.

i would drive 8 houres for a trout lake.

only looking to travel 2 to 3 hours max (from kanata)..closer if possible of course

and yep, looking to bring my boat/trailer..so backwoods stuff wouldn't work so well.

haha..am half expecting to get skunked since it will be my first trout outing in so long..but would be nice if I at least had a chance of catching something.

If your looking for lakers, Then i would recommend Charleston Lake near Athens. only about 1 hour from Kanata.

this is a lot off mileahge you can go to a load off lakes in that time...you consider qc side i would.

thanks Pikeman! charleston lake definetly looks interesting, but I think Lakers don't open until end of May in zone 18, which Charleston falls into. I might hit there this summer though...I always see signs for the Prov Park.

Joco: I really should try the QC side, but was not even thinking that for some reason. will have a look around...gotta get my license for over there.

The $62 non-resident license is well worth it for fishing on the QC side. Large bodies of water are very accessible (31-mile, Pemish, Poisson-Blanc), and medium lakes also hold good and good-sized trout (other species too).

I live 5 minutes from Petrie Island (so very accessible for fishing), but I buy my QC license first, and fish the QC side probably 95% of the time. Petrie, and the rest of the Ottawa, has got fish, don't get me wrong... But there's something in those Gatineau Hills that keeps me coming back. Might be the view, the solitude, the female "view"... or the cheap beer I pick up on the way back home.

... But I've earmarked this year to fully explore Petrie and Cumberland (and Vic Island).

Charleston Lake is a great lake for Lakers. I'm originally from that area and still go back a few times each summer. Lake Trout doesen't open until May 22 though.

Be warned though, Charleston is a large lake with lots of islands and inlets - very east to get lost. I'd reccommend a GPS if you are going to do some exploring. Lake is over 300' in some areas. There are a few public launches.

NY State has great trout fishing and its within 2hrs from Ottawa.

I'm in the same predicament as you... looking for spring brookies, browns or rainbow and want to stay in Canada this year.

The Big Rideau is another option for Division 18 lakers.

It's closer than Charleston, more than twice as big as Charleston, has several launching options throughout it's length and it's a gem for bass.

stocking list for this outaouais region frome 1996 to 2009..should find a trout or two.

i will be hunting more this year for little trout lake...or creeks but qc side.

Sorry new to the Ottawa area. Why is a quebec license so much ? Is it merely cuz its out of province? Or is there more to it ?

Yes the Quebec card is expensive....but like said above the fishing is much better. Alot of lakes, rivers and streams!!!! Also you are in the hills!!



Here in Alberta the out of Province card is the same price as the Resident card.


As for trout lake that you are willing to drive 2-3 hours... Lots of trout waters near Algonquin park... And if you have a canoe even better.


There's a couple lakes on the Pembroke stocking list that have boat launches(sand landings...not too much concrete). Check them out with the backroad map books, it should help you locate a boat launch icon.

Check out Highway 28 there's a lake up there that has been stocked with splake you will be able to put a boat in there.
