I Spent the long weekend on Big Gull and boy was it tough

there was 40 of us 8 to 10 avid anglers and in three days of fishing we managed 2 walleye. is this lake really this bad or did we just hit a bad time. We threw everything from deep jiggin to shallow trolling and everthing in between, I even ran the entire length of the lake on Sat. The one walleye was caught trolling in 17 feet of water and the other jiggin in 40 feet

I talked to a local up there and he said it has been getting worse every year and that the attitude is just catch and keep.

It's too bad Big Gull is a beautifull lake and I would like to go back but if the fishing is this bad next year we will be somewhere else.

I don't know much about the summer activities, but the catch and kill Derby they run each winter can't be good for the walleye population.

My buddy and I rented a cottage there 2 years ago. In the 7 days we were there we caught 2 walleye. Granted the weather was tough during the week but it sure was hard to figure them out. The other guys we spoke with were having an equally rough week.

Neither one of us have been back so I'm not sure if it's usually better.

Question, of the 4 Walleye that were caught, did any of them go back in the water?

Not stirring crap, I've kept Walleye myself... but I'm trying to see if there's a direct correlation between keeping fish and lakes with no fish.

I have only had success catching walleye after dark casting and trolling cranks in weed flats. Several of the guys I go with target walleye. The walleye catches have definitely been fewer the last couple of years.

Agree with Jim, fish pressured waters at night for greater size and sucess.

We figured night time fishing would help but this is a family get away and night time is for campfires and all that goes with them.

On a good note we were treated very well by Big Gull Lake Cottages and my mid day fishing with my daughter for pan fish was amazing. On the Sunday we found a bay loaded with blue gill, we lost count around 200.

It was just frustrating knowing the quality of anglers on this trip and the amount of hours spent to only catch two fish.

Does anyone have any suggestion for a lake in that general area that has accomidations for this many people. this year we had 8 cottages.

I can't vouch for the quality of the fishing, but Crotch Lake and Kashwakamak are both in the area and have cottage/fishing resorts on them. Can you pm me with the location of the bay full of blue gills? I run a kids panfish derby for the East End cottage association and I can always use a few fishing location suggestions for the hard luck kids. The derby is once per year and the kids can only turn in 4 fish so we don't make much of an impact on their population.

We are looking at Kash now, it looks promising, as for the Blue Gill we don't keep any of them just there for fun. The Bay was in what they call little Gull (I Think) Near big Gull lake Cottages. We went back the next day and there was only about 1/4 as many. So we moved around the point to the next bay and found another good population. I would think by now they have finished thier spawn and can be found in the dense weeds on the outer edges of the bays.

Fernleigh Lodge on Kash is a nice place, I've eaten at the restaurant there a few times. The owner also runs the plumbing business that I use for my cottage.
