What is the general consensus? Is using a Rope lure for gar considered cheating? Does it take away from the sport? Does the FH community frown upon the use of rope lures?
A Rope Lure, is basically a frayed leangth of rope, sometimes with weights/hooks/painted to look like a baitfish. So that the teeth of the Gar gets caught in the rope, making it easier to catch the fish.

It's the equivalent of saying, "I am the most incompetent angler ever to venture onto the water."

I'd say that it's definitely frowned upon by fly anglers. Here's a good thread on fly fishing for gar.

Lets get realistic, if any of us were really concerned about hurting fish in any way shape or form, none of us would be fishing with or without hooks, we would just leave them alone completely.
At any time you catch a fish, it puts undue stress on them and guess what, they get over it. So if you have a problem with using rope for fishing gar pike. GET OVER IT.

mlr..you over react.
there was just a few thing say like.. it's definitely frowned upon by fly anglers. and my response.
actualy some rope are worst then some hooks. they tangle badly. again some....
just facts.
and yes if someone dont want to hurt fish just dont fish at all..that is true..but some methodes are better for the fish then others thats is tru to.
using a good fly materieals and hook for an example can undo in sec..and bad rope all tangle can get mins to get untangle...
its just fact and observation nothing more...no one doing morals here.
joco..
most important thing...canmore bring us some reports.
