Hi everyone. I'm new to Fish-Hawk but I've already made great use of all the information on this site, maps and great discussions in the forum. I'm looking forward to getting a lot out of this forum-community.

I'll be up at a family cottage this weekend on the Quebec side opposite CFB Petawawa (they put on quite the show sometimes with helicopter drops into the river and canon fire through the night). Anyway, I'm a novice fisherman and I'll be using a 12 footer with an old 9.9 and my Cuda fishfinder. There's a handfull of small islands in the area which I feel would be promising for walleye. How would you recommed I fish for walleye around these islands? anyone familiar with the area?

I also like to try and find pike when the walleye aren't biting. Would I find them around the islands too?

My advice, keep your eyes glued to your sonar and work the drop offs away from the island. When i'm in unfamiliar water i like to explore spots by backtrolling and vertical jigging with my eyes glued to my lowrance. Fish wind blown sides and the pockets off to the sides where there is calm water. If the wind is really howling these slack areas can be packed with dazed baitfish...the eyes and pikes are right behind em!

Thanks alot Mudpout. Great advice. Id like to add one further question. I've tried using a worm harness on a bottom bouncer before while trolling but had a lot of trouble rigging the live-worm in the desired 'stretched-out' presentation.

Anyone have any pointers?

Well, I've never tried that approach but if cannon fire and helicopter drops don't get any walleye, I think you are SOL. You can always try unmanned aircraft to get a bead on them then chuck grenades over the side.

Bottom bouncers are really a good way to cover a larger area ... I'm sure someone else has advised you on the worm thing ... also in the evening before sunset (or after if you can navigate home ok) the fish tend to wander around somewhat .. especially pike ... when we fish a lake we try and go to a narrows at night and catch the fish coming through the channel ... if you have 2 islands with decent water between them you might want to consider anchoring here for a bit late in the evening ... use a weight with floating jig head and live bait ... patience could likely pay off. One word of advice on tackle we found out the hard way .. rig up for walleye but be sure to have decent line in case you get a pike ... their gillplate will slice through mono line like butter ... personally I like the spiderline ... kinda gives you a little insurance in case you hook something big ...

But be sure you know the way home at night ... and that there's not too many obstacles in your path like rocks and deadheads ... with the water down these things are popping up everywhere.
