We are going up to Opeongo Mountain Resort Oct 1 for a couple of days. Open to suggestions for terminal tackle, locations on the lake etc. I've read nothing but good things about the lake but with only 2 days for fishing wasting time is not an option. Appreciate any feedback..... focusing on sm bass and walleye.....thanks...

your best bet is to talk to the owner of the Opeongo Resort, for the latest report on what is biting and where. A popular spot is right out front of the resort.

Brad that is so yesterday, the only thing that in front of the resort is good for is water skiing. For smallies look for rocky shoreline and for walleye trolling with a big "O" is the lake favorite.

Steamer, you can count on the fish being out in front of the lodge 'cause that's where the fishermen are. Right now the wally are on the bottom in 45'+ of water and rising when the sun sets to feed over the deep water. Try longline trolling large stickbaits i.e. rap taildancers or husky jerks. It's a lower percentage bite but with the 21" limit on the lake you'll strain to take a legal fish on jigs right now. (That's the meat eater in me talking.)
Last night, for example I pulled out the 27lc and put the husky in a orange blue color about 150' out over 25' to 45 ' of water to try and pick up fish as they were rising on the graph from the bottom. Lazy S turns to speed up and slow it down. Most of the fish hit as the speeds pick up.
Oct. might be a diff story it changes all the time. Last year was so cold and cloudy the fish were on top of a shelf step out there in only 15' to 20' and were responsive to a jig bite. This year by Oct. they should be in the same sort of area but only if it cools off by then and it should. Fish the edge of the steps at every abrupt drop or transition. Start deep and work your way in.

Ever try slip bobbing live bait for walleye? Thanks for the info so far gents....

Took a couple of nice fish last year on the slip rig, they hate it when the bait just hangs in their face and nothing does it better in deep water. Use minnows if the water is cold.

This thread is kind of old, but I have just finished pounding lake clear for the better part of two weeks, I do not fish during the day but once sun sets I head out. I marked the bulk of the walleye in 20-25 feet, but by dark it is the same old lake clear, I was slammin em in 10-15 ft, my deepest coming in 21ft, shallowest as well as biggest came in 9ft. My wife even got into a 4lb 5oz smallie in 15ft at 9:00pm trolling. The hot baits seemed to Chartreuse Big O and white Big O...The past three years though you can't beat Orange/yellow X-rap...troll or cast.
