i dont have a boat...yet, but i still want to catch fish. Im just wondering where the best shores and docks are. I'm in Nepean, and want some close places that can produce more than just small perch. thanks in advance

I recommend you go exploring - Google Maps and Streetview should be of assistance. When you find a nice quiet spot that produces, it will be that much more rewarding to you than the more publicized places.

The nation river, you can catch carp,suckers, and mudpout all day long, bring lots of worms

The article mentioned above is excellent. When I moved to town I used it to get an idea of the lay of the land. I haven't foud a dud in any of the locations listed. Good luck.

The Rideau at Bronson is a good spot. I used to walk the north side and east of the bridge...... throwing senkos for smallmouth.

Welcome to FH. In addition to the advice that Outfortrout metioned, I would also suggest that you use the FH Search tool and spend some tiem reviewing the numerous threads discussing shore fishing in/around the capital.

Keep in mind that the majority of members that have spend years exploring the area to find those special spots may not be inclined to offer up specific locations to new members who's first posts are of the "Where is the best spot?" type.

Many members are happy to share fishing spots with other resposnsible/repected anglers and it's just a matter gaining people's trust/respect. There are frequently posts for group shore outings which are a good way to meet members.

Agreed. As a new (few months ago) member I usually do a search in the forums before asking a question....and get an answer faster than waiting for replies. Although when members do reply, the info is very useful.

There is always Petrie...but I haven't been there much since it was just the huge sand dunes.

britania stone pier, hogs back, mooneys bay, dows lake, hartwell locks, rideau falls, victoria island, bate island if you use waders, dick bell park, jock river landing, chapmen mills conservation area, black rapids, bronson bidge, billings bridge, stratchona park, shirleys bay with waders, rideau at carleton u, des chenes rapids, manotick mill, petrie island, constance lake . All these places can produce good fishing at times, and sometimes there real benefit to using waders. The biggest tip I I've found is using run and run tatics. you will cover more water and hopefully more catch more fish. Usually just cast in area for a few times and if you recieve no bites more accordingly up or down stream and repeat. A good lure for for this is a jig with a berkley gulp alive minnow. Go looking for sucess or sucess will not find you. Hope tis helps.

Before I got my boat I used to take my kids to Petrie. Lots of pan fish with the odd pike in the mix.

You know, a few years ago my brother had started to do some research on "Urban Fishing" type spots. It was so much work to try and figure out the best way to represent it, that it finally died for him and he gave me all his research and data.

I might try to dig that up and see if there is some way to add it to the site for those who are interested. Now....I just need to remember where I put the stuff.

To try and tell you two or three spots that are constantly "on" would be nearly impossible. Every spot has its good days and its bad days in my experience.
Take a day, take your car and try maybe two dozen different spots, then go back a few days later and the action may be different, or it may not be different.
That, to me, is the fun of shore fishing. You never know where you will end up or what you will be catching.

I 2nd Nips. The Nation River, especially in the spring is a blast. Before walleye/pike opener you can have a blast catching big coarse fish. I think I've put up a few reports of good channel cat fishing. Lots of sheephead, mudpout/bullhead/perch/redhorse too.
