This is certainly wild, and before you immediately yell "Hoax!", read the whole article.

It is pretty hard to believe, I have to admit, but I like to keep an open mind.

Not a hoax. Check carpanglersgroup.com . The forums have a section for Koi caught in the US. Some are really large.

I saw a photo awhile back of a giant Koi they caught in the St. Lawrence while Carp Fishing.....In the end Koi are just coloured Carp basically so why not? Clearly they are let go but pond owners though.....

All I can say is that the koi I have seen look nothing like that thing. I found that, what I was told was koi looked more like goldfish with nice tails.

That thing looked like a nicely colored carp to me.

MacKay Lake in Rockcliffe Park used to be chuck full of them, might still be. On a sunny day about 10 years ago the entire north end was shimmering bright orange... it's an old quarry so it should be fairly deep but I'm not sure how much cold they could tolerate in winter. Most people I know with Koi ponds bring them in the house in the winter.

Well at first I thought for sure it was a hoax ... the pic looked a little fake ... but from all the other posts I guess it could be true enough ... so what do you do with a koi this large ?? Petsmart ??

I dont doubt they could grow that big. However, it does look like he is'nt putting much effort into holding a fish that big....

Look at the size of the guys fingers compared to his head. Sure, he might be doing the EAP, but I'm sure there is a bit of Photoshop in there too.

I don't think that it is a goldfish koi.

I think that it is a koi carp.

Cprince:

Koi and carp are the same fish. Koi are merely carp that have been selectively bred for the colour and body charactersitic variations. Koi ( ) is the Japanese word for carp.

These critters school with the regular carp in the rivers near my home in Yokohama. It's kind of weird to see giant goldfish swimming about like that. Most of them that I see are multi-coloured - gold/white/black. The biggest I've seen would probably have weighed around 4.5 kilos (about 10 pounds).

As for whether or not this photo is the real thing........possibly.
