Any other Yakfishers here?
Hi everyone I am new to the board, and was wondering if anyone else here was a yakfisher. I know the sport still has not quite hit the fever pitch it has down in the states but I was hoping there may be a few of us around here.
I am from Waterloo, and fish this area a little , Kaufman, and Schneider Flats, Nith River, between, Haysville, and the first bridge after the town by the feedmill. Other than that, I am fishing the Maitland, and Saugeen Rivers in my Yak, or trying out some of the small lakes and ponds that are up there.
I know this isnt realted to Yakfishing but I gotta mention......
Last weekend my Sister In-Laws boyfriend, told me about this pond he knew about that was an old mennonite swimming hole outside of Belmore, he didnt think there was fish in there but I figured we could try it anyway(he doesnt fish that much.) So we get there and it looks to be an old slot quarrie, so it sloped down for about 70 feet, but couldnt be more than and 20 foot wide. So I toss my search bait, a white Super Spot, and give him, an In-Line spinner, I hook up, and after a brief fight, I bring in a nice little pike. Now here I am in shock, a POND PIKE, never heard of them before, he is kind of excited, and I wanted to look around a little bit more. So I give him my rod, with a gold willaims warbler, and tell him how to use, it and where. Suddenly I here him calling and yelling for me, he is fighting what is the largest pike I have seen in that area for a long time, this sucker is pushing 3 feet, though it kinda weak, but he loses it at shore. He hooks up once more for a 2 footer and we called it a night.
Odd thing other than the fact it was a Pike pond, was that, there have noit been pike in the area for about 50 years maybe more, I figure they were an old flood wash. I also saw some weird looking minnows, and weeds in there, its a ponfd stuck in time.

First we have the KaYak, its a Dagger Element 11.2, perfect for rivers, and small lakes, it is very very stables, and quiet.

I like having this attached as I can troll if need be, and I always have my rod within easy reach.

With one odf these you can sneak up on fish, get into those little spots no one else can reach, easily solo, it almost anywhere(only 45 pounds), and cartop it with ease.

Big-O
You and I were both imagining a huge, horned, hairy beast fighting at the end of a rod and reel!
I am sure there are at least a few other "Yak" fisherman/ladies on this board ManInBlackForever. You'll probably hear from them soon. Welcome, anyway!

Thanks, Dad, for taking me fishing when I was a kid.
Hey MIB, I've been yakfishing for years now. Not too many folks around Ottawa combine fishing with kayaking, but to me, it's the most fun you can have with a fishing rod in your hand. I seldom wade any more and rarely put my canoe in the water (it feels very slow, tippy and cumbersome when you're used to a yak). A yak is the way to go for running small rivers and accessing parts of big rivers no one else can reach. I've got a little shack on the Mississippi River, so that's where I hang out most of the time nowadays, but I used to keep my boat on the car all summer and hit the Ottawa, the Rideau, the Madawaska and various smaller streams every day. Yakfishing is a fantastic sport, and I'm kind of surprised it isn't more popular around here. All the more fish for me, I guess.
Come on Big-O...you can't fool anyone on this board...you were shopping on e-Bay all night long for one of those suckers weren't you?big-o wrote:Now I understand.....where do you put the down riggers , fish finder , planner board mast , VHF radio, trolling moter, the kicker Motor , five fishing boxs

Welcome to Hawk Talk MIB. You are likely to find several other Yakers in this neck of the woods...they make an appearance all the time.

I'm a yak fisherman as well.(Actually I'm sparky's son).It really is a great way to get around on the water. The only problem I have encountered when fishing from them is releasing larger pike, etc...However the last couple of years we've been carrying jaw-locks with us which can be a life saver(for us and the fish).
.For the tackle boxes you can either be selective, or place some bungee cords on the deck in front and behind to hold them down.
Well sparky has one of those wrist mounted fishfinders and I carry a wrist mounted FRS.It won't reach a Coast Gaurd station, but on the Mississippi we'd only need to reach my mom back at the camp to order a pizza anyway. As for a trolling motor, I'm pretty curious to see if there is a way to rig up one of those Sea-Doo diving propellers for when I'm felling lazybig-o wrote:Now I understand.....where do you put the down riggers , fish finder , planner board mast , VHF radio, trolling moter, the kicker Motor , five fishing boxs
