West Coast Summer Report

Hi all,

Thought I would put a little west coast report together from my first summer out in B.C. It’s amazing how few people take advantage of the great fishing. I am assuming that for many targeting for fish such as pink salmon, dogfish (shark), rockfish, lingcod and sole out here could be possibly equated to fishing for fresh water drum and suckers in Ontario. At any rate I will continue to target these species next summer and enjoy what a great meal they make. Normally we would take some sole as our choice of dinner. It was not uncommon to have 20-30 fish days in a couple hours of fishing within rowing distance from land.

Some days were dogfish after dogfish. So easy to catch and often times great fights. Visually spectacular when they come up schooled together.

When it wasn’t dogfish it was sole, it was no easy task getting these guys up as the sharks frenzied when you were pulling up these tasty critters. At times you were left with remnants of a sole.

The lingcod and rockfish are beautiful fish. There are restrictions on retention for lingcod. As well, there are no-fishing zones for rockfish to protect the species. We caught a couple over the size restriction.

As an added bonus the sea cucumber, and the great scenery here.

Unfortunately, no ice-fishing this winter on the Ottawa or Nation River.

Cool report man. Is that first pic of a lingcod a Cabazon? I know they have a blue tinge to them.

Great report Spike...I love seeing new species of fish and scenery. So can one touch a sea cucumber without adverse side effects? It looks like the person in the picture wants nothing to do with it.

tight lines

Very cool report. Neat to see species of fish you don't get to see everyday. Like the scenery too, very nice. 8)

Nice report... out of curiosity, what kind of tub are you in? It looks like a smallish tinny... or if it is on salt water I think you are supposed to call it a dory? (Or does that have more to do with the shape..?)

If it is a small tinny... I would think that the wind HAS to be dead calm for you to be out there...?

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the comments guys.

Ya Bucketmouth, these fish are ling cod. Well at least the girlfriend swears by it.

You can definetly touch the sea cucumber, Yannick (fisherguy 33) wasn't their to take it off for me.

You got it Craig, has to be calm in a 12 foot tinny, poor man's boat.
Didn't have the heart to steal the neighboor's brand new boat in Rockland.

Looks like one of the westcoast islands like Pender or Saltspring.
