Need help identifying a fish i caught at Petrie Island

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Need help identifying a fish i caught at Petrie Island

Post by Gas Man »

Hey everyone,

I caught a bizzare looking fish at Petrie Island near the culverts on Sunday (Dec 5). Basically it has the head of a catfish and the tail of eel. I tried googling that combination and I couldnt come up with anything that should be in Ontario waters. ( I did find a eel tailed catfish but it is found in Australia) The fish in question didnt have scales, it was quite slimy. A dark green/light green leopard like back and white underside.

I have two pics that I can email you if ur interested.

Thanks,

Gas Man

oh.... same day i thought i was snagged on a branch but pulled up a oyster the size of my hand.... is it normal for these to grow that large??

Sounds like a bowfin, google it. I didn't read close enough first, no scales... than probably a ling as mentioned.

Surely a ling, we catch alot thru the ice down there. Also called lingcod or burbot. They range from a mottled greenish yellow to a dark brown almost black. Was it as slimy as an eel and as ugly as Jimmy_1?

This is a post I put up whenever I see that some one mentions that they do not know how to post pics!!

I hope this helps... and we get to see some reports!!!

There is a photo section of some description on this site... but I find it easy to upload my photos to imagashack.us then follow these steps:

In your post press the "Image" button.

Image

This will result in a tag that will look like this:
Image

This is an image tag.

Next go to the page where you uploaded your picture. For this example I used imageshack.us but you can also do this with any picture that is on the internet, as long as "Hot Linking" was not disabled at the source site. Some use Photobucket, picasa and flickr...

At the up load page, copy the URL that they provide to directly access your uploaded photo:

Image

Paste that link next to the IMG tag in your post:

Image

Then press the IMG button again. This will "Close" the IMG tag... it looks the same as the first one except it has a forward slash "/" in it.

Image

After you have done this, you will have the joy of including a picture in your post like this one I built for the example.

Image

I think that there is a maximum number of pictures per post... I think it might be 6 or 8.. cant remember...

Good luck!

Here is a problem one member ran into explained:

This is how you had it:

It is the spaces between Image whereas it should be ...jpg[/img]

Yep looks like a ling to me. I have caught a few on the mighty Ottawa. Just be careful handling them. No matter how far away from your body you hold them when they flip their tail it always seems to get you right in the berries!!! As much power as a mule kick!

Ling for sure. Burbot is a completely different fish, although similar in general appearance. The burbot has a distinct eye-spot on the tail. It is NOT recorded in the Ottawa area, although I beg to differ. Seen 'em.

Yep - Ling come shallow in the fall. The mollusk that you got is actually a freshwater Mussel, specifically, an Eastern Elliptio.

The Ottawa river has a wide variety of Mussels, more than anywhere else in Ontario. Origins back to the Champlain Sea days, when this area was salt-water.
