Hey All,

I have a couple young kids that I am introducing to fishing and I'm looking to bring them to a trout farm near Ottawa for some guaranteed trout to get them hooked on fishing . Thistle Springs Farms has closed its doors, does anyone know of any other trout farms within an hour drive of Ottawa.

There is OPEONGO MOUNTAIN TROUT FARM near Eganville and PURE SPRINGS TROUT FARM between Kingston and Belleville.

Sadly the answer to your question is "No"

There are no longer any trout farms within an hour of Ottawa. I have looked every summer for the last few years (since Thistle closed). Would love to take my kids, but alas, like the drive-in theater, these places are becoming few and far between.

There are tons of areas in Ottawa even that should provide decent shoreline fishing for kids.You didn't say how old your kids are. As long as they catch fish is all that matters. A bobber and worm will catch almost anything. The young'ns will be happy and you will have saved lots of money. Plus, maybe you can catch a bigger one and you can pass the rod over. Light outfits are a must. Small fish feel big. Making a picnic out of it will add even more memories for all of you.

Here's a local suggestion for you to check out that might suit. Again, this depends on your kids' ages. There's a small little park in Blakeney that has a few picnic tables. The river there falls from a big "pond" in a few different runs with cross channels. It's a pretty neat section of the river. Back in the day we would wade to the several small islands and fish all over. We caught some nice fish and had fun. Now there are boardwalks traversing the channels so you could maybe fish off of those. Check it out. 25 minutes from SBP.

Marc I'm speaking from positive experiences. My girls are now 29 and both still love fishing. They learned young how to go pee behind the truck ice fishing on Shirleys lol. We would have a good crew out sometimes and we'd send the girls out to clean out the holes and wake up the lines and when they got older to replace dead minnows too. Sure enough, sometimes just after they walked away to check out the next line , the line they left would get hit. And of course it was their fish cause they were closest and got there first. I still have scars from from a gar that my youngest caught off the causeway in early summer. How not to grab a gar 101 lol. Lots of blood. Great memories.

if you look at google maps, and form a triangle between gloucester cumberland and casselman, there is a fish farm somewhere in there.
Sorry I can't be more precise, when I first moved to Ottawa in 2000, I got lost somewhere in there and we found a farm that had ponds and had a sign saying fish farm.
I've tried over the years to find the name of this place but was never able to find it again.

Opeongo has been closed for a long time now

Opeongo is not closed. They moved down the highway a bit. If you call ahead you can make an appointment. I took my kids and nephews there last summer. Sadly though, everything they had was around 1 lb. I remember as a kid they had multple ponds, but they only had one when we went.

Either way, we brought home 15 rainbows that were cleaned for us as part of the fee and I don't think we spend more than 45 bucks. Needless to say, my brother-in-law and I had a feast of bacon-wrapped stuffed rainbow trout broiled on the bbq with a side of mushrooms and onions from the skillet.

They were trying to sell the place for years.
It was an amazing place to take kids!

Although it kinda became "ghetto" as the facilities were really becoming run down and not looked after (it was also a camp ground) so the pool, tennis courts etc all fell into disrepair.

I think it was family run so long and with fewer people taking kids out, camping etc it just wasn't worth it likely.

They were always a friendly bunch and sad to see it has closed.

I was at thistle once, they said they had a bear problem, I suggested I could hunt there and they were not up to it.

It did not seem like they really made any money off it, only 1 pond had fish in it and not a lot of fish that is for sure.

Closed for a couple years now. Doesn't even do school tours anymore according to my friend Brad who is his neighbour.

You're looking at the wrong place then. Because where they are now, you can't see it from the road. Long driveway off the road.
