Been thinking about making my own lures for quite sometime now and have finally decided to give it a shot this winter. So i have started the process of gathering all the supplies I'm going to need.

I already make my own walleye harnesses as I got tired of buying them constantly but this winter I plan on trying to make some balsa wood minnow baits, wood muskie lures, Bucktails and top water baits.

The wood working tools are easy enough to find but was wondering if anyone knows of any local shops that sell lure components? (stainless steel wire, beads, blades...etc) if not I'd also like to hear about good online sources of this stuff...I just prefer local so I can see and touch before buying.

Are there any other anglers on FH that make lures that would be interested in sharing their experiences and/or designs back and forth?

Some people (not having time or the will to produce as a hobby) might suggest just store both, but something about catching something with something you made yourself.

I'm in to fly-fishing and making my own flies for the last few years. Love it.

Just remember, supplies do add-up. Boy do I know, I could open a store. Got an uncontrollable weakness to have things available.

Won't start about my new added venture of carp fishing, and bait making and the tools that go with it.

Show us some pictures when you'll have a few lures made.

I've been pouring plastics for a few years and there's nothing better than catching something on a bait that you created. Brings a whole new element to tackle selection an matching the hatch. Like LeGrand mentioned tackle making can get pretty expensive pretty quickley. Not to mention how addictive it can be! Have fun with it and look forward to that first fish on your new lure

Make sure you keep your eyes open at all the outdoors shows. I cleaned up last year at the show in Carp. Bag full of spinner blades for dollars, Giant mustad hooks for pennies, beeds and lead weights for pennies...just great deals

I make my own spinners. I make my own flied. I make my own marabou and deer hair hooks. I make all my own still fishing and vertical fishing rigs. I haven't tried making wooden minnow baits because just painting, sanding and varnish will take hours...If you are retired go ahead, if not, you're better off doing a little bit of overtime and going on a shopping spree!

I get all my swivels on ebay. I get all my fluorocarbon leader line at the big stores around Ottawa.

I find that the blades are less expensive in USA, thru Hagens and the plastic beads cheaper in Canada at LurePro.

There are MANY sites for lure components on the web.
