Is it just me or have the Crappie been in deeper seclusion that usual this season on the Rideau? I am still waiting for them to come in shallow but still not luck.

This spring has been so late arriving that photoperiod and water temps aren't lining up as they should be. Fish are scattered a bit but some catches are still being made from boats. A few of the Rideau locks have had fish in them for weeks with numbers being caught. The best Crappie fishing in our area is still to come in my opinion and with Pike/Walleye being open I'll be all alone doing it...

Thanks Yan and RJ!
RJ, I agree when was the last time we had a walleye opener before the crappie spawn? Sheesh.
Informal reports from the long reach are that the crappie are in and out of the shallows depending on daily temp. One guy I bumped into said he caught 50 one day and then none the next day.
I caught my first 3 today but they were action was light.
What seems to be active though is the perch. I have caught dozens of them of good eating size. They seem to be hanging out close to the bottom.

Yesterday, I finally wet my line for the first time this year at the dock in Kars...I fished for about an hour, with not so much as a nibble...before I left, I made a halfhearted cast, and I nabbed a small crappie (maybe 4 inches) with a small curly tail white grub. That was it...no other bites. I think we'll have better results in another week or two.
