Future star and a bit of an ouchie...
Future star and a bit of an ouchie...
I've been spending as much time as I can in the boat lately. For me, that's not much
I've been taking Matthew out whenever he wants and the winds aren't blowing which has been the case a lot of weekends. He turned 3 the end of May and is doing pretty good lately lasting about an hour each trip. I can extend that a bit with some swimming and candy from the store haha.
Couple 'pickerel' from a few weeks ago
Bass season finally opened up and that's what seems to work best. We go to a spot I call 'the nursery' as it's full of small bass and you sometimes get them every cast. Sarah (who is now 5) is actually bored with that spot lol. Still it's not too hard to find some better fish for the kids.
Last weekend I got out for an hour and a half Friday night with my neighbours kid, and finally an hour with Matthew. We fished 10 minuets in one spot, he drove the boat for 10 minutes, we fished for 10 minutes at another spot, swam for half an hour, and then in the last spot found a few decent fish for him.
I need to find a better rod setup for him. The decent smallies pull so hard and put so much pressure on the reel he can't turn it. So both these he scooped up with the net himself and let out his dads scream each time haha.
It's a ton of fun with them on board and it feels like things are only getting started
Of course I've been sneaking out when I can too. This fish got the best of me... if you wonder why I'm smiling it's probably because I was relieved to finally have the fish off the other hook
Was able to push it through and cut it. Caught another fish on that same bait 3 casts later
All in all things couldn't get much better this year. I bet I'm wrong though... and am looking forward to it!

Already a young pro, poppa must be proud! I don't even know the young lad and I am proud of him, those are some sweet fish! Yowsers on the hook, that's a good one!
Re: Future star and a bit of an ouchie...
Thanks gang! Yes he is enjoying it for sure and surprisingly doesn't get too upset letting fish go. Sarah on the other hand is not a fan. I have to do it after when she's not in the boat
Sorry about the hook picture

Re: Future star and a bit of an ouchie...
The young lad looks like a natural! Nothing better than fishing with kids. I also have a spot that I take my kids that seems to produce regularly. My kids are 6 & 10 and still struggle with the 3lb+ smallie they use my gear which are mostly all 3000 spinning reels on 7.2' M & MH fast action rods. Its great though because they really like to net them and I like reeling them lol!
BTW I have that same popper works fairly good for the smallies eh better than some of the $25 ones I bought...

Wow - kids grow fast!! Awesome to be sharing this time with him.
Gotta admit Brad, I was expecting an ouchie with the little kid, not the big one!!
That's gotta smart a bit.
