Mississippi Lake Pickerel?
Mississippi Lake Pickerel?
Hi all, I am going to be at Mississippi Lake next weekend and was wondering if anyone had any tips on locations or techniques for finding Pickerel on Mississippi Lake. I understand that they are there, but I don't know the area at all.
Any help is much appreciated!

Rickant:
By golly, anyone who calls "walleye" Pickerel, (the correct name).........deserves help.
If you launch at Johns Marina ($6.00)or 7, forget; go on a right oblique to the little island across the lake. See a burnt down something.......right island. Small island.
Should be in about 14ft. of water around the island, with a steep drop off. Use jig and a worm or minnow. You are going to catch lots of rock bass etc. but the "PICKEREL" are there. Nice cloudy day and some chop and you should be in business.
Venture a bit farther down the same shore to a point of land with a 25 ft. hole in front.............TOWARDS Carleton Place...........Fish the hole and the bay following. Jigs and worms or plastic should work here.
If you launch at the MNR free site (Drummond 9A) go right across to the big island and work the hell out of all the shoals around it and between it and the next couple of islands. If you don't catch pickerel you should maybe do ok on smallies.
Basiclly, you have to work harder for your fish these days. Early and late are good, but we have caught em on a calm day, 30 degrees, right on top of a shoal, in full sun, so go figure........
Best of luck: Jigs.
If you launch at the MNR free site, maybe stop at the huge weed bed at the mouth of the creek, and drift texas rigged twisters or worms thru it.......lots of bass there, and some pickerel.
There, gave away 20 years of learning in 2 min............dang!!
Crappie............sorry , yer on yer own.

Thanks a million. I am not sure where the MNR launch or the creek is but I know where John's Marina is. I've done some limited fishing deep in Hunter's Bay among the weeds and there was some good Pike and a few Bass but none of the ones I am really after. I don't really know the lake. I've heard stories of Pickerel/Walleye being in Mississippi but I havent actually seen one
I'll be out for sure next weekend.
Thanks for the help and I will keep you posted if I find any!

ol miss.
Bacon;
Thanks, been fishing that place for years, and never knew the name......Aptly named for sure.
Just watch, someone will change it to "Walleye Water" or somesuch.
RICKANT: Sorry, should have mentioned the rocks etc. Course if yer fishin pickerel, you ain't bombin in at top speed............
.......are ya??
AS for the creek........Stay on #7 till you see sign for Drummond Conc. 9A (or 9.......been a while). When you turn down this road, there is a fairly new house and then an OLD LOG CABIN on the left. You is on the right road. Keep going about 1K, over a bridge, and you will come to an open field with a dirt road going down to a sand launch. This must be Federal land, as they recommend not using lead jigs till you are beyond the creek mouth.(don't usem)........Ok to havem., just dont use them till you are on the lake. Launch and then pull up on the grass and park.
Then proceed according to instructions.............
The creek is not deep, so, slow is recommended, maybe tilt the motor too.
Good luck: Jigs.

Thanks for all the tips. I spent pretty much the entire weekend out on the water. I only found one pickerel and a small one a that on an earie dearie trolling from the mouth of the river in the south part of the lake out towards the big island in 20ft of water. Had a bit of luck with some bass around that pickerel point island and some good fish and some really good hits (and misses) up at the two islands to the north (dinkey dooley or something like that). We found quite a few small mouths, some pike and a couple of nice large mouths too.
I think my favourite spot to check out again is a point just out to the right of baitcasters (robertson's point?) with a hazard marker. The bay just before it on the baitcaster side had some nice fish in it. I had thrown out a big-o and my line was fouled up and I let it sit on top and ignored it while I fixed it up and I had a bass grab it like someone shot a cannonball out of the bottom of the lake!
Anyway, thanks for all the tips!
